Some thoughts: The problem of Steady States
These are some thoughts that relate to every MUD and every MMO I have ever played on. Some approached the problem well, some approach it poorly, but all of them have to deal with it in one way, shape, or form. I mention them now because with a complete reevaluation for Toril 2.0, it seems like an id...

Third ed, from an actual game standpoint--working with things such as balance, simplicity, available choices, realism, and intuitiveness--is superior in virtually every respect to AD&D 2nd ed. Balance--a great deal of focus has been put on this. Most of the classes are close in balance within a leve...

Since you are using an iBook, may I recommend Rapscallion instead? Much easier to configure/customize than tf. Website Rapscallion is dead, RIP. MacOS X Comment
The website says that it recommends Rapscallion for MacOS users. Rapscallion has been discontinued and hasn't even been completely carbonized to work with MacOS X. There are several clients which run natively on MacOS X. I think most of us just use TF, virtually no one uses Rapscallion. The creator ...

Re: Rogues and weapon fumbles
Is there a reason rogues seem to fumble their weapons about 3x as often as anyone else? I've primarily played mages, but they never seemed to fumble 3-5 times a fight. The rogue can even manage to fumble both weapons in 1 round! It's crazy. I think my current record was fumbling every round for 7 r...

Ok. I still don't understand why you need a compelling reason to play a race in order for them to be an option. Then the choice is non-obvious and forced. This is the exact kind of thing you avoid when designing games. It seems like the compelling reason to play a human is they have no real disadva...

Why?
Because they are presented as a choice.
Either remove them as an option or give people a reason (beyond "you can play a paladin") to pick them.

100% what Nuk said. I'm kind of fond of the D&D spell Improved Haste. It wouldn't significantly improve caster number of melee attacks, but would strengthen the damage of the real melees significantly. No offense, but adding a new spell to fix melee would piss off most if not all non-casters. yeah....

Some thoughts on gameplay and game balance
Games. Games are not movies which you sit and watch, though those can be fun, games are about choices and decisions. Anytime a decision is forced which excludes a certain option, that option should not be in the game in the first place or should be modified to make it look attractive. Some examples ...

Over the years the Mage classes on this mud have evolved. The melee classes have not. THIS is why the melee classes suffer. It's their stagnation. They need to evolve as well. I agree with your goals, let's talk implementation from a game design standpoint. Your new skills are where I have most of the problem--there is too much variety.
