Re: This used to only happen in Russia and socialist countries

Yet, if it is happening more often on the left in America, we have a serious problem that should not be ignored, nor identified by a different name.

Re: Interesting article on convicts and risk assessment

How is society harmed by a person that made a poor decision largely due to a mental condition when the victim would prefer that the criminal receive treatment instead of punishment? Deprivation of freedom and forced treatment, assuming the accused can be rehabilitated, coupled with punishment purely...

Re: This is a terrible reflection on justice

Very much so, they must base their arguments soundly upon the law, any other judge above them will tear them apart if it is not well grounded. But my original point relates to HOW they construct their grounded opinion. When you have 30 doors to start to walk through, you inevitably have to pick a do...

Re: Interesting article on convicts and risk assessment

Just because we try to make the punishment fit the crime doesn't mean that society is suggesting that the minimum standard of conduct required of citizens is subject to a meer weighing of the costs and benefits. Of course criminals take into account cost v. reward in deciding whether to commit a cr...

Thank you for that. Someone actively moderated our forum - and it needs that to grow as a community, something I've wanted to see for a while. I plan on having a lot to do with that growth.

Re: AMC - The Best Network On Television

Breaking Bad is pretty good. I've been liking the trend of shows lately that have the whole "two masters" conflict going on. Rescue Me is another one, but not on this network.

Re: This is a terrible reflection on justice

Well, they will make their case with some basis in the law, but how they construct their arguments is personal. Judges are there for their opinions, after all, and not for mathematic calculations.

Re: Voting at a Church?

Churches are commonly used in areas where no suitable public facilities are available. Apparently, the vaunted separation of church and state only applies where people are offended by religion.

Teflor was here. While we do not need a cop, we do not need a rule-breaker either.

Re: Awesome, a 4 yo is being sued for negligence

Kifle takes it way too far. To allow the suit simply opens the matter to arguments and a judge or jury decision. It is best not to throw out cases before they can be heard, and those that are thrown out should be kept to a minimum. How else are you going to create new local government jobs?

Re: Interesting article on convicts and risk assessment

However, you are also not allowed to drive over the speed limit. Yet, due precisely to a calculated risk assessment, nearly every driver exceeds the speed limit. If a medical condition prevented people from making an accurate assessment, one might use the same logic and care of thought that normal p...

Re: Interesting article on convicts and risk assessment

Of course many companies would chose not to hire ex-felons. There are plenty that do. Some workplaces don't like to hire asians. Others don't like to hire people from out of town. The fact is, however, that most former convicts find jobs. They may not be considered by the elite as 'good' jobs, but a...

Re: Interesting article on convicts and risk assessment

Marketable skills are meaningless when felons are treated like they have the plague in the workforce. As soon as a person enters into the prison system, they receive a scarlet letter which makes them the least likely candidate for any job available -- regardless of skill (for the most part). Also t...

Re: Citizens Against Government Waste

It's funny that you say that, Corth, because you might note that we owe China "dollars." Not in another currency. Inflating our way out of a debt would destroy the life savings of Americans. Refusing to pay kills the credit rating that the United States has come to depend on for all of it'...

Re: The Rally to Restore Sanity

Unfortunately, shouting "calm down" isn't really a message, but it was an entertaining use of the National Mall. Awesome opportunity, however, for a mainly young and DC centric crowd to come out and see some live music and some A-list celebrities. The Crazy/Peace Train bit was interesting,...

Re: Interesting article on convicts and risk assessment

Getting back to the article - the conclusion was that additional jail time doesn't necessarily serve as a deterrent. I'm not going to disagree, and yet I still think that violent crimes deserve a stiff punishment - certainly more than what is common in most European countries. Deterrence isn't the ...
