Wow, I really hate T.V.!!
Wow, I really hate T.V.!!
I havent watched TV in quite some time, yeah I do catch a glimpse here and there. So, I sit down and decide to watch a movie on TV, True Lies!, I figure it should be enjoyable considering I liked the movie! No Way! man!! I never ever remember so many damn commercials!! It really angered me! I couldnt stand it! I walked away dissapointed!
Now, Tonight! I tried to watch DateLine with my girlfriend, same thing commercials, millions of them trying to sell me things I dont want (allthough I did like the Gatorade commercial with peeps coming out of drops of water!). I think I will spend most of my free time doin other things now! Mudding! Muwahahahaha I win I win!, hmm what the hell is my point? Oh, is there a god that can put the TV back into TV, I didnt wanna petition this!

Dateline is the worst show ever.
Stone Phillips: And how did that make you feel?
Victim: We were hurt.
SP: Was it the most crushing, devastating pain ever?
V: Yes.
SP: The pain of a heartbroken mother yearning for the lost child she could never again hold, never again feed or love?
V: Yes.
SP: The wrenching pain of almost not being able to go on, yet still retaining a glimmer of hope amidst the rubble of your lives?
V: Yes.
SP: You heard it here first.

TiVo simply rocks. It's a device that falls into a category called "PVR", or Personal Video Recorder (or some such). At its most basic, it's a hard-disk based VCR but it's really much more. It offers programmed recording, "season passes" to your favorite shows (never miss The Sopranos), and the ability to search for shows by a variety of methods (name, actor, etc.)
Here would be my fave key features:
With Tivo, you can pause live TV. Tivo is always recording (30 minute buffer) so you can do instant replays, pause while you do a quick CR, or run to the little boys/girls room.
You can tell Tivo your favorite types of shows with a "thumbs up" or "thumbs down" for each program. Tivo then records similar programs and offers them to you to watch at your leisure.
Tivo offers an on-screen TV Guide-like functionality where you can scan channels and times for shows. Push the "select" button on your remote and Tivo will go to that channel if it's broadcasting now, or will record that program if it's in the future. The Season Pass feature lets you capture all episodes (first-run or repeats or both).
Instant Replay. You're watching your fave program and want to re-watch the last x minutes. Easy. Rewind and rewatch. Tivo keeps on recording while you watch. You end up watching TV with a lag from realtime, but fast-forwarding over commercials easily catches you up.
Aside from the news, I haven't watched live TV in over a year. The only way I caught that damn Gatorade commercial with the water (cool effect!!!) was that I saw it in fast-forward and rewound Tivo to see the effect.
Tivo requires a phone line and it calls out to get its programming at seemingly random times. It's a local call for most folks. There is a subscription fee per month or you can buy a lifetime membership. If you buy, I recommend buying a low-hour unit (even used) and upgrading the unit to higher capacity yourself... providing you're somewhat mecho-electrically inclined.
It's the best $200 I've spent in years.

Wow, Tivo...I must say I'm shocked. I never knew our culture was so excessively lazy that we needed a device to make our television watching experience more easy. This must be the greatest invention since....the remote control. Do we need to run directly from the office chair in front of the computer to the couch in order to make sure we don't miss the latest mindless drivel and corporate brainwashing that television gives us? Our society needs help.
Hrmm..
Actually Tivo is best suited not for lazy people, but people who have very hectic schedules. The person that works 70 hours a week and wants to watch the 8pm show when he gets back from work at 10pm. That same person also would substantially benefit from skipping 15 minutes of commercials during that one hour show.. 15 minutes he can use to be with his family. I don't see it as a sign that anything is wrong with society.. i see it more as technology allowing people to more efficiently use their time.
I mean.. computers are a relatively new thing.. and they have made it much more efficient to do business.. and yet people are working more hours than ever. Cell phones mean you can take work related phone calls during your hour commute (stuck in traffic with all the other sorry foos). Its about time that a piece of technology came out that actually benefits people by enhancing their quality of life.

Its not a subsidiary of Microsoft.. Microsoft has no relation whatsoever with tivo. And I'm not sure what it would mean even if it was a Microsoft subsidiary.

Yes, and Microsoft introduced a competitive product called UltimateTV that is failing miserably. Best Buy and Circuit City have taken if off their shelves.
