World Cup

Postby Zetey » Wed Jun 05, 2002 3:52 am

Who are you guys pulling for this year?

I'm an American, so pulling for our national team is like rooting for the Cubs in baseball (or for Europeans, like pulling for France in a war). They try hard but they're never going to win.

That's why I love Brasil! They're playing so well and confident right now, I think they have a legitimate shot at the final.

In NCAA basketball I root for Gonzaga, in the world cup I root for Senegal.

everyone likes brazilian football....as it were played in the 50's. yes pele charmed the world, even as late as in the 80's brazilian football was special. now brazilian football is just a major lack of tactics, no defence, and one player that hasnt shown his best the last 4-5 yrs (that would be ronaldo), the rest not worth mensioning. brazil can loose to any of the teams in the world cup, and will so to, they will be lucky to go on to the playoff. a bet on brazil im sad to say is a waste of money. the argentinians on the other hand look very strong, the same goes for the spaniars, based on what theyve prooven sofar spain or argenina will be the world champions, argentina being the safest bet, since they have players on each position that can be replaced by their substitutes without any weakening of the team.

i hope sweden is lucky tho Image

Looking at Spain's history in the World Cup, I wouldn't bet a dime on them.

I'm glad I'm Canadian and don't have to watch boring soccer....if we do it's punishable by law. Offenders are plummeled with snowballs, cans of 5% beer, beaver pelts, and tapes of Hockey Night in Canada.
Any game that ends in a 1-1 tie, and has no fighting, is lame.

The US is playing well, but I don't think we have the horses to win it all. Germany looked strong till stopage time against Ireland. Argentina got beat by merry old England. Spain's been hot early, but will they choke? Italy lost to Croatia (much like France losing to Senegal, or Portugal to the US). Saudi Arabia? Did they buy their way in? They played like boys among men, there had to have been at least one better team in the world that didn't get the invite than them.

I'd like to see Holland win if the US can't pull it off, but I don't think thats gonna happen either. England was gaining a lot of confidence, and if they continue to play stronger, has a chance.

Toplack * has no real clue who will win because he's an Av's fan and is bummed his team didn't at least show up for game 7* Frostbear

I usually dislike and watch very little soccer, however the World Cup makes for an exciting finals series to kick back and enjoy on TV at leisure.

It's great to see France out in the 1st round!

Favourites have got to be: Brazil, Italy, England, Germany & Sweden, with Spain a chance on thier form.

Argentina's form seems to be very poor, and I wouldnt like to see them make the final 4 anyway.

It'd be great to see the USA make the final 4, and too Mexico, Russia and Croatia.

Beckham is such a goose England deserve to get knocked out soon simply for naming him in the team - he should go play for Argentina or Italy as his onfield acting skills are a match for thier "best"! :P

Once the 2nd round is upon us, we'll really start to see who can win games well, hopefully.

Good stuff (for a fag game).

Oh yeah, the offical website is at:

Holland didn't even qualify... the team is comprised of many millionaire punk kids who think they are so hot, but they didn't even manage to get that far.

Question for the experts... Why does the host country usually do better than expected? It seems like its more than just a home field advantage...

id say climate. dood playing soccer in japan right now is hell. humid humid humid and 30 degress celsius... suppose italy should be used to that though.

also, the pyscological effect of having 60,000 cheering fans can push you a little harder...

well, I'm leaning towards brazil now. they've been my pick all tourney behind sentimental fave the US, but since I didn't expect the US to reach the quarters, I've been pulling for brazil.

I'd say germany, brazil, spain, and senegal will advance, with the final pitting brazil against spain.

thursday night will probably be the most exciting night of the whole thing for me, with england/brazil promising to be a great match and germany/US providing some fun (my roommate is german).

I completely expect the germans to demolish the US side, but in this world cup of surprises, who's to say the US can't win? =D

Rockin' to see Italy beaten!

Dun care by who, just that they're out.

Fell asleep during 2nd half, unfort, so missed a lot of the controversy. But we'd be fools to think there is nil corruption and chance at the refs swinging games of any high profile sport.

Lets hope that wasnt the case.

From what I saw, Italy lost it fair and square, by failing to capitalize and play well enough to win.

Bring on the quarter finals!
