ROBBER IN RUSH TO FIND BROTHEL

A thief who asked a taxi driver to take him to a brothel
after robbing a building society was jailed for nine months
in court yesterday.
The court heard the man was an alcoholic who drank
four litres of Fruity Lexia wine before committing the robbery.
James O'Malley, 29, of no fixed address, appeared before
the court after pleading guilty to demanding money with
menaces on February 7th 2002.
O'Malley, who was on parole for the same offense last year,
demanded a teller to hand over cash.
Although we was not actually armed, he placed one hand
in his jacket pocket implying he had a weapon, and the
teller handed over $1225 in cash.
O'Malley then told the teller: 'Right, you can press the
alarm button now,' before fleeing.
He appeard to make no effort to disguise his appearance.
O'Malley then went to the nearby taxi rank and told the
cab driver to take him to Light St, Bar Beach, saying:
'I'd like to go to the brothel in Light St. Drive at 200 km/hr,
I've been in jail for robbery and I'm in a hurry.'
Afterwards he apparently spent the remaining proceeds of
the robbery on gambling, drugs and alcohol, then decided
to give himself up to police.
He was sentenced to 2 years and three months in prison,
with a non-parole period of nine months.
