Monitor choices

Postby moritheil » Sun Aug 25, 2002 6:43 pm

I'm looking at purchasing a 17" LCD monitor. Does anyone have any pointers or suggestions?

LCD's don't like resolution changes. Make sure anything you plan on running won't throw up when forced to use a preset resolution.

Well if you go for a Dell flatscreen, make sure you go for that extended warranty

less than 6 mths..screen showing burn lines
call up..replaced..
two weeks later, call to replace cant adjust
next day new moniter arrives..BIGGER Image)

Could get lucky like I did, though I would rather have no hassles.

oh.. stupid me didn't realize that you said lcd mori.

For 1280x1024, the Samsung LTM170E5 is some rocking glass, it uses the PVA substructure which is the newest and by far the best lcd type.. trust me, I've done enough research and testing on this stuff at work Image

Otherwise for 1280x1024, check the technical specs on the monitor, and try to get one that has 200cd brightness and 350:1 contrast ratio
or better. You can tell by the viewing angle what the glass type is.. generally 80/80/80/80 angle is IPS, which has good viewing angle and contrast, but isn't as bright. Numbers under that is usually TN, which has rather poor off-center viewing angle but is brighter. If ya find some that you are interested in post the type and I'll do some checking for ya Image

Oh yeah.. and digital input. If your video card doesn't have digital output, get one that does.. it makes a huge differance for LCDs.

OK, nods, was wondering about the angle and the digital issue. Thanks!

Get a CRT if you play a lot of games. LCD's have a native resolution, everything other than the native solution will look fuzzy or stretched.

I gotta agree with Dlur. Samsung makes some nice monitors for cheap to. Trinatron CRT's are very nice but also expensive. I would still go with a CRT unless you realy need the extra space.

It's hella painful attempting to find an LCD with digital input (strangely enough). Any suggestions?

Samsung 17" model 171P has a silver bezel, model 172T has a black bezel. I can find the 171p on pricewatch for $850-$900. The 172T is new I think so its not listed yet. You should be able to find the 171P in a computer store too I'd think. Both models use PVA glass and have analog + digital inputs.

You get the 17" LM700 or LM720?
*tsk tsk tsk*
Either way the glass specs kinda blow.. old school TN glass structure. Its ok for text and stuff, but it'll blow for watching movies or playing 3d games Image

quite frankly lcd's are not there yet.

if you plan on doing any type of photo editing they do not support the color bit depth nor the resolutions to do as such.

they also can only display one resolution effectively.

you're better off with a flat screen CRT

So what's your guys' opinion on the best place to get a 19 or 21 inch monitor? I want something with a good warranty, and would like to not spend more then 400 bucks if i can Image
