buh-bye egroups!

Postby Sarvis » Sat Jan 27, 2001 1:43 am

I find it kinda funny. A week ago everyone said they preferred the egroup. Then it switches to yahoo and a couple hours later the BBS is back! :) Dunno... just thought that was kinda funny... heh.

Thank the Gods! That Yahoo crap was horrible. Who in the hell grabbed both Harthorm and Twiblin as Yahoo ID's? Bullsh*t. It definitely wasn't me. Oh well, don't have to deal with it anymore. I'm glad this place is back, I miss it from the old days :)

Looking forward to MUDding.

Hmmm. Doesn't it seem a little odd that somebody has grabbed names from a MUD that hasn't been up in a long time, all within the space of 2 days? Now, granted, we don't have to use Yahoo anymore, and can post our messages here, but perhaps there's a twink from the Yahoo groups that was trying to jerk us around? Just seems like an awful coincidence. How many people frequenting Yahoo are going to choose to call themselves Harthorm, or Malacar for that matter?

Just idle speculation, but perhaps we have a traitor in our midst. Muahahaha. *cough* Or maybe Yahoo's code is broken and it's saying names are taken for some other weird reason.

As far as this board, as I recall it used to be much friendlier in layout when it was used on the TP BBS last time. I have seen this forum package on other sites and know you must be able to modify it. Here's some things that would I wouldn't mind seeing implemented on the boards:

1. Not having to log in every time you post a reply.

2. Being able to see the last poster instead of or as well as the originator of the thread in the topic listings.

3. A list of "All Topics" for those who don't like to bounce around in the different subtopics to view new material.

I'm sure there's other things that would be nice, but that's it for my creative juices this early in the afternoon. I just got up, for gosh sakes!

Yeah, those are all good ideas.

I haven't decided for sure to stick with this BBS software, but it was the fastest thing I could get up. We'll see what happens...maybe I'll code my own with jsp or something ;)

Hey all.

Is there any way in which we can get a digest or something posted to us daily? I _had_ subscribed to the egroup on my work email, but since I have a firewall sitting in my way, I can't get out to read the BBS.

:(

It was nice being able to have email posted to keep me from being bored at work... *mutters something about large companies & firewalls*

There are some board/list programs/pages
that do both, at the same time of course..
The popular paid for one that comes to mind
is an orielly web board, although I have
definately seen others (PHP/mySQL base)
about the place...in fact I am working on
one for an arts association I run atm...

*shrugs* any-one bored?...pun intended

I'm toying with the idea of writing a web board/email list thing using jsp and mySQL. I like getting this stuff in my email as well, so we'll see..

Can you try to make it work mostly like this does? I like having all the messages and replies in the same window basically so I don't have to click around to look at all the replies when I'm arguin... heh. And have the option to recieve emails or not... cause I prefer the web interface really...

I think Yahoo! is screwed up... almost every name you pick is already taken, I think their admins have probably had so many complaints that they just coded it that way.

For example, I tried to register Faerwynd, and it was "taken". So I did a user search on Faerwynd, and there was none. I searched for "faer" and got like 100 results, mostly Faerie69 and stuff like that, but no Faerwynd.

So anyways. UBB rox0rs anyways. You don't get the stuff emailed to you, so that sucks, but you can see the whole thread in its entirity! I have been missin' that bigtime.

Yeah, the idea is to combine the best elements of egroups and UBBS to form the UberBoard.

Anyways, still thinking about it and whether it'd really be feasible. I'll let you all know if I start work on it.

http://thinkofit.com/webconf/#freeware

is a link to a good list of web boards..
many of them are open source so thought
it might be useful to you for ideas etc.
I know that majordomo now has a web front
extension for it, perhaps also worth a look.

http://bne001w.webcentral.com.au/~wb003

is a sample of a WEBBOARD / oreilly board
that does all these things..I know they cost
a fair bit tho, but might be inspirational..
btw if you stumble across any good ones
using MySQL or PHP tell me!...
