Oldie but a goodie. Nilan turned me onto this book years ago, but it's out of print so had to track down a library that had it.
Villians by Nessecity - By Eve Forward
A _really_ good read. Very good book.

Writer: Cecilia Dart-Thornton
Trilogy name: The Bitterbynde Trilogy
First Book: The Ill-made Mute
Second Book: The Lady of The Sorrows
Third Book: (Will be coming April, 2003)
This is a debutant writer and her first novel. The trilogy is about a young woman and her quests through the lands of Erith in search for a past, name, and face.
I think this book was very different than your regular fantasy-story. Mainly because it's written by a woman I suppose, and the main character is a woman too. Miss Thornton is very descriptive in the surroundings and the different characters. Well I loved the book and it's something I would recommend for those who have read the WoT, FR series and other well known stories and look for something different.
Olamdir.

Although its not a book series per se, it practically possesses the qualities of a well written novel series. I highly recommend the "Lone Wolf and Cub" series of graphic novels by Goseki and Kojima. Excellent excellent stuff, well researched and drawn. For those who've read the series, I must say that Ogami Itto is one bad bad mofo.
In terms of actual books, the last two that I really enjoyed were "Red Robe" by Jon Courtenay Grimwood - a really excellent Cyberpunk style narrative, and "A Storm of Swords" by George R. Martin. A Storm of Swords was particularly excellent and I highly highly recommend the Song of Ice and Fire series that Martin is currently in the process of writing. Particularly for those who are really worn out on the whole "epic-quest" style fantasy novels that have become the trademarks of countless Forgotten Realms/Dragonlance novels and novellas. Martin has developed a really excellent set of gritty characters, and does a fantastic job of establishing a reader's sympathy for both the antagonists and protagonists of the series. In fact, by the time you get to the third book, you may find yourself which side is truly evil and which side is truly good. I also particularly enjoyed the way he portrayed mercenaries/sellswords. Definitely do NOT read the book though if you prefer more "idealistic" forms of fantasy though. This series has sex, drugs, incest, rape and extremely graphic violence in large quanitities.
