Sound like someone you know?

Postby ssar » Fri Nov 29, 2002 10:52 pm

October 2002

A 24 year old South Korean man was found dead in an internet cafe after playing for approximately 86 hours straight.
Witnesses say the man didn't sleep or eat during the entire time.
He collapsed once, got up and went to the toilet where he was later found dead.
Further investigation found the man wasn't even playing - he was farming online worlds for high-value items to sell on E-Bay.

Yeah, the family gave me a lot of grief about that.

But I've always advocated that one should not fear death.

Besides, I like to eat/drink at the same time.

In 86 hours you can make so much more going to work than you can farming games for items to sell on ebay.

I know, I made almost $700 on ebay last year selling diablo 2 equipment and characters. I did the math, it evened out to about $2 an hour over the course of the year.

Er, no. I didn't mean to imply that I was the 24-year-old guy. And I'm not dead, either, last I checked. Well, not in RL.

Had a guy in college do a similar thing, he was a study addict.
He would take like 27 credit hours a semester in very hard classes then try to ace them.
I remeber one of his study sessions went like 3 days non-stop.
His roommate seen him slumped over at his desk where he studied.
He figured he was just asleep.
Ends up the guy was in dire need of medical attention at that point, luckily they decided to call the hospital and saved him, but they said if they hadn't called and decided he was just sleeping and left him, he would be dead.

Any country where you have the means and the resources to spend 86 straight hours in an internet cafe is not an environment where making $2 an hour will change your life.
