Make do like car designers and scramble frantically around the globe searching for a name that:
1) hasn't been used yet
2) doesn't sound like any other name
3) is still special and befitting after all this searching
Maybe that's why some car series have numbers like the BMW.

Cherzra:

Read what I wrote.

cherzra is unique as a single entity, however, it is also a compound word the same way "Elseenas" is a compound name (go ahead, search for "elseenas", yet both "Elsee" and "nas" are names from different cultures).

do a search for cher zra and you will see what I mean.

Here's something that irritates me everytime I type 'who'.

Most elven (and some other races') names no longer sound elven!

Example: level 50 elf "Styxar". Darn is he the personification of the river Styx? Or a tough human warrior? Cause he sure sounds like one! Whatever happened to singing, eloquent elven names?

This also applies to other races - so many players have names that do not even remotely resemble what their race help files indicate, sometimes even using characters they are supposed to be unable to pronounce.

If anything should be reinforced, it should be the racial guidelines. I'd rather see a Raburi orc occasionally than everyone with human names.

Racial names add SO much to the atmosphere, and generic human names detract SO much.

I'm gonna have to side with Dartan on this one, Raburi is just a japanese phonetic adaptation of an english word. Wether on purpose or not, no one pronounces it in those phonetics, we simply use the english ones.

"Rah-burr-ee" and not *Ru-bare-eye*

Why be so fricken anal about something that doesn't even matter, if one person hadn't brought it up, no one would fricken care.

There are 100+ names out there that are NOT original fantasy names... We all know at least a dozen.

Why should we ruin the fun for these people too? They have worked hard under these names and earned the freindship and respect of thier fellow mudders. So why is it that if someone finds an obscure(boy is it ever) link to a word(that's not even a word) that someone else should have to change their name?

Just seems childish to me...

You sez "Roger that."
Morithiel has left the group.

Why be so anal and not post here?

Then you'd be admitting you were wrong.

Mystra was quick to point out that Gormal was gaelic to me...but it freaking sounds dwarven abd i honestly made it up ( i actually sat down to think one up) kildran happens to be nardlik backwards (thanks for showing me that joe)

I saw a character named Ceres yesterday. I was told that the grandfather thing worked and if Rand ever came back he'd be granted his name again.

Personally I'm more worried about names that dont fit racially or are blatanty something in english...i mean come on this is an english speaking mud. Who cares what means something in northeastern swahlili?

that's interesting. So if Rand came back he would be granted his name back but Mamoru was name declined. Nitania is a rl name i believe and it was grandfathered too. Was Mamoru hated or something?

What's the Diel here?

Whenever I talked to somebody from the mud on the phone they pronounced my name DEEL. I never had the heart to tell them it was pronounced DEE-EL because it really doesn't matter :P

Or you could be like Malacar and pronounce it FUDGEY... or something..

I was 15 when I came up with my name, no one ever picked on me about it all these years. Now I find I am a graphic arts company and a city in Ohio.

just curious about how some are grandfathered in and not others?
