Sojourn Alpha Delayed 3 More Days

Postby Ragorn » Thu Mar 29, 2001 4:16 am

Due to a glaring, abusable bug in the new combat code we located tonight, the gods decided that the open alpha would have to be pushed back another three days. I'm not really at liberty to discuss the numbers or explicit details behind the bug, but it essentially allowed a player to attain infinite amounts of hitroll or damage roll through the casting of a combination of stackable spells. In fact, after 5 minutes of spelling up, I was so powerful I was able to cleave an elite militia guard to pieces in just six rounds, by myself. The attribute screen dispaly screwed up, but I did the math and estimated my damage bonus to be around 1,300. Finally, I can compete with area spells!

Naturally a bug of this magnitude would pretty much render any data from the open alpha void. I have no idea how much of my own data was tainted by unknowingly activating this bug during regular combat testing. As a result, I've spent most of the night re-evaluating all the combat information I've taken from mobs in the last three or four days since the latest combat code update was implemented.

I apologize to everyone who was anxiously awaiting the opening of the MUD. I hope you understand the reasons behind this decision. I apologize to Miax for crashing the MUD six or seven times by accident while trying to pinpoint exactly which spells were causing all the trouble. I apologize to Waelos for being bitchy when he tried to get me to disclose what I was doing. And most of all, I apologize to you, the reader, who may have fallen for the best April Fools joke in the entire galaxy.

Heh,

1. It's not April.
2. If you found a bug of that magnitude you wouldn't report it but would whine until it became a Ranger 3rd circle spell Image
3. Don't go into the arena!

Enjoy.

LOL, Ragorn! That was great! I especially liked the fact that if your post was true, alpha would open on April 1st. Wonderful! Image

Lucky for me i am a sceptic and know "Never trust a ranger"

But first thought was hmm why is Rag's posting it not Shevy or Miax? Something is fishy here i best see what the damn hippy is on about.

Hey Azz,

You know, you don't know me. You've never grouped with me, you talked to me for like 15 seconds on Duris when you were level 1 and I was level 50. These other people who give me a hard time, they've known me and played with me for years. I don't mind joking around between friends, but don't jump on the bandwagon and call someone you've never met a whiner. It's not funny, and I don't appreciate it. It's not just here, it's every time my name comes up and you have something to say.

I'm a real person, just like you, who's put in a lot of work to make sure you have a fun place to mud. So do me a favor and show a little respect, ok?

Ragorn,

You are right I do not know you, did speak on duris (heh, never asked for equip/levels...good one, i think was looking for a guildie or something). "whine" bandwagon..yeah i jumped on but do apologize if you took it serious/was offended..was not meant in a "complaint"/"slam" type manner..only a friendly jab to a well known topsider.

Respect for mud testing..umm, I thank you..along with all the other testers, coders, and area builders....would gladly be there myself doing it if asked (along with some 200+ others).

cheers.

It's cool, Azz. I have my bad days, like everyone else. I laugh at the occasional joke, just sometimes on a bad day it's frustrating to go into every third thread and see people ragging on you. No harm, no foul.
