What class and hometown did you pick? Around waterdeep the best place for a few levels is probably out east of the city and in the area east of turning point.

On a personal note, if you are new to sojourn, the best way to get some levels is to ask people around your level to group with you. If you prefer to solo, then start at Market Square in Waterdeep, and go 27 east. This will take you to the valley of crushk, where you will find many animals and some low level humanoids. Near there, is a village of the podlings. Ask around. You can use the "who good" command to see who is online. Also remember to use the newbie help channel, you can ask a question by typing "nhc where is the podling village?" (without the quotes).

If you started a character that did not start in Waterdeep, just ask for directions.
