Spell, wall of stone etc...

Postby Wobb » Sat May 04, 2002 6:59 pm

Although on Duris wall of stone was twinked beyond belief, I was wondering how people felt about it here.

For those of you that don't know what it is, a caster makes a wall "north" for example, preventing mobs from coming in, or you from leaving in that direction.

I think a couple of things would have to be different, such as wraiths should still be able to pass through, and dragons should simply be able to knock it down, but...for a lot of other zones, could make things interesting.

Thoughts?

A thousand times no... for one simple reason.

I can name a good 3-4 ways right now that it could be used to either a) tink things, or b) make a lot of existing fights significantlyu easier.

hrmm

I dont think the argument that it would make fights easier means much. Stoneskin and heal makes fights easier no?

But besides that, Xebes is right, it would be overly powerful in certain situations.

The only way I could see this working is if the spell was only useable in zones that were flagged. That way an area writer who wanted to allow people to use the spell in the zone they were writing, could write the zone specifically with that mind. In that sense, this wall spell could be nice insofar as it would give area writers more options.

But if it were applied broadly to zones that were not written with this spell in mind, it would be very damaging...

Consider two obvious thoughts:
a) walling all four walls means there's no longer the risk of any mobs entering on you.

b) you can now direct which direction you can flee, turns many fights that used to be hard cause you had to do them straight up into ones that can be done in runs.

Both these possibilities are problems.

I have considered using these spells in the past and (sadly) discarded them because of insurmountable balance problems.

Cool. Glad to know it was at least considered.

I agree too that given the population it would be twinked to death. I'd code it so that you can only have 1 wall in a room, and it's tied to the enchanter, so if he cast it elsewhere, it disappears...but all for naught.

Not saying in particular that I want the spell in the game, but rhough I'd throw this out..

It could be made an illusionist spell.. and dragons/demons could be unaffected (see through the illusion) and so could mobs that succeed at an int check. What effect this would have on players, I don't know.. just an idea.

This spell would have so many player vs. player options it would never work.

Hmm.... I want some jot rares, I think I'll wall off tree and wait until more people log on so we can do planetar instead of evils.

Hmm.... I found Zog but it's just me, I'll put 4 walls around him and everyone else can kiss my butt until enough guildees log on.

Y'know.

If it were like Duris you'd have to be within 3 levels of the caster to dispel it.

And this just opens up a WORLD of abuse, like walling off guildmasters and the inn and stuff. Plus this would have all kinds of irritation problems, like someone walling off a room in BGR to kill a mob and nobody being able to go through until they were done Image And would it even be legal to dispel someone else's wall, and how many PK issues would that open up? Image

Bravo, Shev.

I agree Ragorn.. It serves absolutely no purpose on a !pk-kill mud.

Even if it is fun to wall people into an inn, and kill them on entry to loot them Image

make the wall dispellable within 10 levels
short duration
outdoors only
and only if it fits within the size of the room
someone said one wall per caster - this is good
give the wall hit points so it could be physically attacked/destroyed
