Beholderkin

Perhaps the most feared of all magic-using races is the Beholder. Resembling nothing so much as a large, floating mass of bulbous eyeballs attatched by stalks, the Beholder's very gaze strikes fear into its enemies.

Beholderkin are the lesser cousins of beholders, just as illithids are the lesser bretheren of ulitharids. They are suited for mages or clerics, but terribly lacking in physical attributes.

Beholderkin have small, fleshy tendrils used to grasp and pick up objects, but have no real hands or the like. As such, they cannot wear earrings, headgear, arms, wrists, hands, and ring slots. Nor can they wear legs or feet. However, owing to their multiple sets of eyes, they may wear 3 eyepatches. They may also wear the normal two held slots, or wield a weapon, although their weapons will be extremely limited by their illithid-like strength.

Beholderkin have the following innates:
Permanent: ultravision
At will: levitation
Usable once per day: detect magic, ray of enfeeblement, invisibility, sense life

Allowed classes: illusionist, elementalist, enchanter, invoker, cleric

Sweet idea, but they should have perm-lev, otherwise, how'd they get around? Unless they've added wheelchairs during the time of my sabbatical Image

Heh, Kalith just pointed that out too...

Kalith: like the fact that they would be perm lev, not lev at will
Mori: ok, post that, it's a good point
Kalith: because if they arent floating, the only way for them to move is to roll
Mori: rofl rofl

ROFLMAO, could you see a beholder walking around with three eyepatches? Just duct-tape em to the stalks?

Touk rolls a beholder:

A surly-looking beholder enters from the east.
A surly-looking beholder says 'ARR, wot're you lookin' at?'

<worn on right eye> a pirate eyepatch
<worn on left eye> a pirate eyepatch
<worn on middle eye> a pirate eyepatch

You guys are sooooooo late on this. When the debate over 'What the new race was gonna be?' before orcs, I said make beholders. Let them get special attack abilities as they level give them big HP's, give them super limited eq.

The problem is, everyone laughed and said 'Yeah Riiiight' instead of giving it some thought.

Innate Lev
Infravision
Spell Resistance 1% per level

Instead of Spells give them Skills per level that are instant, but are PSP based and recover slow.

Make them hit hard and have high HP, but they get hosed on EQ slots.

To make it more interesting, make them 'minorly' resistant to friendly spells also.

(no I dont think they should have 10 eyepatches, but give them any of the tiara/circlet headwear 4eyes maybe neckwear (drape it over their head /between eyestocks))

They would make for a cool evil race, and OMG the HOMETOWN!!!!!

Someone get started on the Caverns under Mulmaster.

For the record, I'm totally serious on this. Along with this, a lizardman that at creation chooses which side (Good/Evil) they want to be. Shaman Warrior Druid? maybe.

Depok eyes the difficult 7 - 10 jot gate guard split.

He rolls the beholder,
It's in the lane,

A beholder rolls in from the west
A Jot Gate Guard crashes to his knees
A Jot Gate Guard is stunned
A Jot Gate Guard crashes to his kees
A Jot Gate Guard is stunned

What a great pick up for the spare!

"I am Depok Headshrinker!" he yells

Beholders should also be OC from a majority of the evilrace towns, shouldn't they?

It would be interesting to have "OC evils".

Salen I agree that innate attacks are more in keeping with the beholder tradition, but imho it would be annoying to use Image and I'm not sure they want to code a race with 10 innates.

Heh... PC beholders, if they had all 10 procs, would be soloing dwagons now. Posted this before the proc addition.

Actually, DO you think a stacked PC beholder could solo a dwagon?

Bwahahahhahahahahahaha

If they all had the procs, I don't think Tiamat herself would survive it.

Hmm, starting on demi? Of course we'd have to make it somehow playable, so we'd have to add an xp grid to demi... hmmm.... and an inn of some sort. (I don't see beholders camping?)

Actually, I think they would lag behind illithids (imagining u don't give them innate brain drain as well).

Well, I saw that others who had quested me for the 'ress thread' spell were putting it to good use, so I thought I'd exercise my right as the originator! Image
