Alternate Quest Ideas
Alternate Quest Ideas
Sojourn had a very wide variety of quests. With the exception of high level spell quests, the reward for question was invariably equipment. That's all well and good, but I'd like to throw out some random ideas about other types of quests that could foreseeably be implemented on S3.
The following quests are designed to be accomplished ONCE per character:
Alternate spell quests. Once you quested Gate and Relocate, you could memorize them without a spellbook. Why not allow the same ability for lower level spells? Perhaps code a quest that, when completed, would allow the caster to memorize minor creation, fly, stone skin, sense life (rangers), etc. without the use of a spellbook? We all keep spare books ANYWAY, but being able to memorize Fly without a book would be convenient for corpse retrieval.
Skill quests. Upon completion of this quest (possibly from a guildmaster in a far off town), you receive a notch in one or more of your class's primary skills. These quests could be put all over, with easy quests giving notches in bandage, clerical spell knowledge etc., while the harder quests notch bash or 1h slashing.
New skill quests. Give each class a dormant skill to enhance their primary function.. ie, range specialist, weapon mastery, healing specialist etc. Set these skills to never notch above unlearned. Completing the skill quest will "unlock" that skill for the character, allowing him to notch his mastery skill.
These quests are designed to be repeated as many times as desired:
Experience or money quests. Nuff said.
Alignment quests. Look, doing alignment sucks. Why not implement a quest that will raise or lower your alignment by 100?
Customizable item quests. Mentioned before I think. Set up a quest mob to accept a main quest item and a handful of "accessory items" that will determine the stats of the reward.
Restring quests. Would have to be staff-run, but restringing the occasional item allows players to feel the joy of having uniques without actually creating overpowered items.
Discuss.

Ragorn...
All of these quest ideas are good :) The one that especially caught my eye was the alignment quest. It makes much more sense in a scenario like this:
A ranger's alignment is low because of previous "unsavory" deeds, and to please his/her gods or maintain his/her status, the alignment must be brought back up. Now, it makes more sense to put forth a little bit more effort than just slaughtering thousands of Orcs, or whatever. Mass slaughter doesn't prove you have an interest in maintaining your faith. Most alignment is done by slaughtering the wimpiest mobs with the worst alignment. Honestly, if you were a God, would you be impressed by some dual wielding elf killing hundreds of Orcs (and then profiting from it by hording the pounds of silver?). These quests should be handed out by the Ranger's guildmaster, or another paragon of virtue, so to speak.
That's all I have time to comment on, as I'm supposed to be working (it's already starting, and the MUD isn't even up!).

oof... 3am... been reading too much. Well Rags, I like the idea of skill notch quests. I don't know if anyone remembers a suggestion on S2 that exp quests be tried out. But 'cler spell knowledge' as an *easy* quest??? That's like saying '1h slashing' should be an easy quest...
Moritheil 'Yay! My spellcast generic notched... from pressing my pcorpse.', errant Druid.
Moritheil 'Yay! My spellcast generic notched... from pressing my pcorpse.', errant Druid.
As far as I know, all the skill "clerical spell knowledge" ever did was allow you to _see_ the spell name when a caster began chanting.
Instead of..
Brom begins chanting...
Brom utters the word "PZAR"
You see..
Brom begins chanting a spell called "HEAL"
Brom utters the word "HEAL"
The only _real_ use I've ever seen was knowing when a mage was about to shield up or cast meteor swarm or something. Other than that its a novelty skill (something Bards should have more of).

I would be interested in hearing if ppl would be interested in questing as a alternative to xp'ing and EQ gathering? As a example, would you spend your time questing for mud fame or solely as a RP thing even if you received no direct character altering reward?
Some changes to the way questing is done is in the works now. Personally I think you will be surprised at some of the additions to the Sojourn3 questing. Hopefully its going to offer more chances to RP, explore and show off your mud knowledge. Even the way rewards are given for questing is new and exciting!
As we move along a annoucement about questing is sure to follow

Questing:
I loved how all the new zone makers make even the common mobs reply to "ask woman hi" with something. I mean I really loved it. It brought the store bought CRPG feel to Sojourn.
It also gets people in the habit of always talking to mobs. This is probably the most important thing for questors to do, that and maybe actually read the room descriptions. I for one will not have the luxury of play-time like I did in my college days and Sojourn 1. I plan to join a good RP guild and quest a lot.
At some point in my MUDding evolution I began to care less and less about "winning" and began to care more and more about "having fun" (of course the competition will always be there, it's part of who I am!). Anyways, I'm sure it came with age, but now that I'm older, I'm more into the "story" that Sojourn III has to offer as opposed to "winning" (i.e. being the first bard to 50th, getting the first Tia Uniques, etc.).
I'm sure things would be different if I could afford to play 4-12 hours a day like the old days. I might have more drive.
Wait a minute, where was this going. Oh yeah, I can't wait to see what has changed along the "questing" lines. I really hope with all the new areas/zones that mobs are more talkative. Not only does it add to the overall excellence of a zone, but if the area maker knows how to do it, they are more likely to put quests in it. Even if it's a quest for 10 platinum for delivering a baby from a kidnapping drunken ex-husband, it makes the MUD more REAL.
Keep with it Staff. I know we're all appreciative of the work you're resurrecting for us to have fun with.

You give a small dragon egg to Arabos, Dragon Tamer.
Arabos's eyes fill with excitement and delight when you present the egg to him. "Oh! A silver dragon egg! Thank you, I shall raise him as a pet and steed. For your efforts, I will train your warriors in battle!"
You have learned something new about bash!
You have learned something new about kick!
You have learned something new about 1h slashing!
You have learned something new about 2h slashing!
You have learned something new about rescue!
You have learned something new about shieldpunch!
I'd do it.

I like the idea of an alignment quest, but a problem i see is how hard it might be. If it's an easy quest, the ranger could go kill goodie mobs all day long, and when his align gets low, just run over, complete the quest, a few times, and bam, continues on the goodie mobs. Maybe make the quest once or twice per boot?

For the non-rangers out there, I'll explain how good aligned mobs and rangers mix.
You, as a ranger, kill indiscriminately. When you notice your align drops below 450, you go spend 8 hours in split shield doing worthless align.
I dunno about Waelos or Saitcho, but *I* never turned down a Manscorps/Library group just because the mobs were good aligned ;)

At least for Paladins, you lost exp for killing good/neutral mobs. Kinda like forced RP, but it worked. I always avoided killing good mobs, even low level ones, just out of habit. Maybe it should apply to Rangers (to a lesser extent of course) just to develop the same kinds of habits.
Ok, heck, that might not be what you want to do, but maybe if you just reduced the experience a little bit for the other alignments, rangers might be a little lest apt to smite them indescriminately.
Neah screw all that, just a brain fart.

Heh... bout right. Though for some wierd reason my alignment never seemed to change, maybe if I ever get to do some zoning or soemthing. *pout* Err... the point... oh yeah...
Make more quests, lots of them. Especially newbie type quests like the one on the ant farm or the one with the merchants in GN.
Then, and here's the relevant part, make it so that every quest has an affect on your alignment. For instance if you trade two babies into slavery just to get a bracelet you become a lot more evil, but if you kill an illithid that's breeding giant ants to take over the world you become a lot more good. These should maybe take level into account as well... heh.

Hello there Questfans. I know you're all eager as to what Lost has to say about this. Snicker. Well, here is a lil idea I had for the quests on the mud. Something to make them better, more diverse and to lessen quest twinking.
I would suggest that a quest mob have different processes for different classes that start and finish them. For example, if a cleric goes to Thellas and says, whassup? The tree might say back Yo, I need that there Dead rat for my quest, because you're a cleric and have different things you can do to help. and the steps could vary a little bit for certain classes in certain areas, and in the end the reward would be different for different classes too. This would prevent us Rangertwinks from doing Ambran and just giving the holy weapon to our lvl 1 dorko paladin =) It would give everyone incentive to try a quest on their own....Oh hey, you got an elven nosewarmer from Jumba the Locksmith? hell, I wonder what I'll get if I complete it!
Of course, you could just have the quests be rather random on their own, without having anything to do with classes, but I like my way! (of course)
Thats all, thank you, please rhumba through.

I remember helping with a lich quest at one point, and I remember thinking that it would be nice if warriors got a similar quest to make them into a hero class/prestige class of some sort.
Not sure what the rewards would be (probably nothing like all the power a necro gains from transforming into a lich), maybe more hitpoints, increased stats, a cool title change (from warrior to hero, or defender or something)... Always wondered why stats didn't go up (like they do in DnD...).

Hmm well stats don't go up in D&D.. not basic statistic anyway, not unless you change the rules around a bit. Although I could be wrong about that, I always used my own set of rules anyway that included occasional stat increases..
But I think it'd be nice to get a stat point every few levels or something, it would sort of reflect all the training and hiking that the adventurers have been doing (something besides just basic levels).

Yeah they go up one every 4 levels in 3rd, but I think FR was supposed to be based off of 2nd.. but whatever, not like it matters, point is that I'd like to see stat increases every few levels on Soj3 also, regardless of what was done in D&D in any edition.

You get one point to put into any stat each four levels starting at first level, which is a good way to overcome the (reportedly) low starting stats on Sojourn...
While it's practical to start players out this low, it's also realistic that a fighter will get stronger after X time units of training/combat. Also, a spell caster would undoubtedly get smarter/wiser with X time units of scribing, studying w/ a guildmaster, and combat casting experience...
This isn't to say that by level 50 every class should be at max stats, but small incremental ability score jumps would be nice to see...
RE: prestige classes/quests, I realize that that's some major coding (as was the lich quest/class), but it does give people something to strive for, and would induce many players to quest more regularly (for something other than items).
- Ruhr (looking forward to noxious fumes bracelet quest!)

FR is based on D&D, no particular eddition (I remeber playing it for AD&D). They are releasing the new set for the new eddition within the next couple of months.
While a cool idea, particularly if they had the option of simply progressing instead of going for the extra ability, it is definantly a non-trivial piece of coding.
Personal preferance: if it were implemented, the decision should be forced earlier than 49th/50th level.

Give the player like 2 points every 5 levels, kinda like spell circles, and when they hit 46, that gives them a grand total of 18 extra points to distribute. Most could max out around 2 stats, and would still have needs for other +stat eq. Under 20 would be interesting, since you don't exactly know what your stats are yet.... imho.

Ragorn,
LOVE your ideas.
I think it would ad MUCHO RP to the game and anyone who knows me knows that I love RPing. I think we, as players would have a very good time questing w/ smaller quests of the sort you mentioned in your first post. I know I for one would delve head first into these smaller non eq-outcome type quests. Im sure other people would disagree with these ideas and _not_ do these quests, but the mud needs something to do solo, maybe this could be a portion of that.

I'm not sure where I pulled this from but I'll toss it out anyway.
What about some kind of item that measured a players progress of questing. Maybe like a portable bulliten board kind of thing that only gods/big quest mobs could post on but anyoen could read. That way anyone could have somethign to show from a God-run quest and Gods wouldnt have to dole out eq or whatever.
My other variation on this idea was an item that visibly measured your prowess. Like the only Cyan letter would move up the name as you progressed and once you filled it you get some neato stylistic item and/or some experience. What takes one notch at level 21 wont even come close to counting at level 50. Lots of this is mostly God-run quests but I'm sure it could be incorporated into mobs as well.
