A Smiling Face

Postby teflor the ranger » Mon Jan 24, 2005 6:26 am

Here, the plains extended to the horizon, stretching out even further than the eye could see: a sea of tall grasses restive and restless upon the fertile soils that made up the gentle, rolling hills as waves in an ocean; frothing as gentle winds drew an invisible comb over the lands. The ranger looked up briefly from his meditation. The day passed as he gathered peace within him, and he noticed as the warmth of the sun came directly to his face.

So far from civilization, from drow and elves, humans and ogres, the hustle and bustle of city life was a type of silence, one devoid of any noise not sung by a chorus of nature. It was here a ranger felt safe, without walls or city streets to mask footsteps approaching him, no buildings to provide cover for those sneaking around him, and the endless fields of life without motives or reasons, the creatures of nature without feet nor legs to move them.

The ranger never understood, but it was these creatures that would even act to protect him. They sung to him quiet hymns as they tried to soothe their guest.

And yet, Teflor did not feel safe. For he had no concern at all for himself.

Suddenly, something, somewhere, some... Unknown wrenched at his heart, grabbing him by the lungs as he took in a breath, pulling him to his feet. The ranger reached urgently for his bow as he violently yanked a single feathered arrow from his quiver, readying the weapon for an unseen enemy. There was another presence here.

His eyes darted over the plains, to his left, turning suddenly to his right, swinging his bow with his field of vision. The ranger turned on the balls of his feet, turning to face what may have been behind him, only to find nothing that he could see. He grited his teeth as he steadied himself for whatever it was that would come.

Teflor's heart pounded within his chest as he balanced himself lightly on his toes. His body became utterly and totally aware of how his sheathed swords rested against his hips, turning again in vain to try to face the threat.

Only this time, there was something to aim at.

A tired and disoriented enchantress looked down the ranger's arrow shaft, slightly dazed. Teflor's hand shook slightly as his arm shuddered, slowly releasing the pressure on his bowstring. As he lowered his weapon, Ayra smiled softly at him, releasing his worries.
Teflor does. Teflor does not.
