A loud knock came at the door; young knight in training was standing there. I recognized this boy; he is one of the guild master’s new recruits. He fumbled around in his pocket and pulled out a small note. Cautiously he handed it to me, and took a few steps back. The note read:
Karae, it has been long since I’ve last meet with you. It has been long since I had last laid eyes upon you. I wish to meet with you.
I gathered my things, and headed out the door. The young knight opened his mouth and spoke. “I am to escort you.”
“Do you think I need an escort?”
“No sir, but its orders from the Grand Paladin.”
“Well you better keep up with me, and stay close the desert is no place to fall behind.”
I started my journey back up to Waterdeep, the city of splendors. My quest here would have to wait. As we crossed the desert the young paladin in training, and started to enter the forest of tethir we set up camp, just before the brownie settlement.
With a curious face the young trainee asked “What were you doing out in the desert sir?”
“Searching.” I said sternly, as I polished my sword.
“Searching for what?” he asked, he obviously didn’t not catch the tone of my voice not wanting to proceed.
I put my sword down, and stretched my arms, and spoke. “Chalsembyr.”
“Chalsembyr, what is that?”
“It’s not a what, it’s more of a where, it’s also known as the high seat. It’s the secret location of Torms Kingdom when he was mortal.”
“Why are you looking for it?”
“It has become a game between me and Torm; it won’t be much longer till I actually find it.”
“That’s what I said. Do you even know the stories? What happens there?”
“The one, who finds it, will be raised up to his side, to be his servant. Even though I serve him with everything I have now. It’s the last step.”
“Last step to what?”
“To end my life on Faerun and start a new one. I’ve done many things, been to places no one on this plain of existence has seen. I’ve seen kingdoms, and nations rise and fall at the edge of my sword.”
The young paladin leaned in and asked me, “Could you tell me a story, the Grand Paladin has told me of some of your exploits, I would like to hear one please.”
I decided to indulge him and tell him a quick story before I took watch for the night. I leaned close to the fire, and began.
“I do not know the name of where I was. All I know it was dreadful, darker than a moonless night. Darker than the tunnels in Underdark. The local monarch was bleeding the lands dry, strip mining, cutting down all the trees. He was sending all its resources to the evil one. It would slow down the evil ones plans some if I were able to halt the steady flow.”
I stopped as he leaned in further. Took a drink of my water and started back up.
“This was not going to be an easy task, stone golems guarded all the entrances. I was going to have to leave my mount, so I could slip in undetected. I made my way to his throne room, up the stairs slowly. As I reached the door, I charged in. This so called monarch was an undead lich, it felt like I had battled him for days as we danced around the room. Finally I struck him down. As the my blade entered his body, the darkness that was covering the sky lifted, and rolled away.”
I stood up, grabbed my sword, and prepared for watch that night.
“You best get some sleep, we will be traveling even farther tomorrow.”
