In a dim light at the back of a small classrom, once, there was one who dared ask aloud, "what is a soldier that has no home?"

The response was swift, mechanical, precice. It was given from another who knew. A master of his times, of all times. Conflict, victory, vulnerability, defeat.

"A mercenary."

In this classroom was a struggle like any other. Between knowledge and ignorance, student and teacher.

"Then what is a mercenary who has no price?"

Another answer was not so readily forthcoming.

The wanderer had seen four hundred seasons of war, each conclusion passing into the next, each result the following cause. He'd had sides, friends, weapons, enemies... Twice he had a home, he loved and he lost.

Everything gained was destroyed, except in fleeting, bittersweet memory. Only then the conflict would come to a close.

But this battle was over.

His blades, inherited from an adopted father deceased and unknown had been bathed in more blood than any good man should have ever seen in any lifetime. Both bore down, torn from a nightmare late in the darkness of night, nearly upon his wife's very life. The flames that carried her anger were not the only powers beyond control.

The loved, and the lost, were to be sheathed again as they were above a fireplace, in a home that destroyed the shattered and burning images of the ones he failed so many years ago.

Whispers in the depth of memory offered a promise, one given among others so close so long ago.

"A home for peace." For the two at his side, and those beside him in memory.

Teflor heaved a shovel over the edge of an open pit, then, grasping the earth, he hauled his body out of the hole in the ground that those in the camp would help him fill again over the next few months. The work was dull, the contest between him and the earth, the shovel in his hands a tool for his new struggle.

Some of the children had gathered at the pit on this balmy and windless day, drawn to any sort of activity that would aleviate their canvas boredom. Covered in dirt and sweat, he grinned at the little ones that jumped in to help him, and at the even littler ones that began digging their own little hole off to the side.

Producing a flask of water from his bags, the ranger took a swig for himself, then tossed it down to one of the taller of the working children.

"That's good enough."

Teflor was never much one for conversation.

"What should we do now," asked the children in the pit, some already climbing out of the hole they dug.

"Logs. Ones that still look fresh, straight... Little branches on them are ok."

The wanderer wondered why he had never thought of this before. A place for people to go and deposit their excement away from everyone else.

It made more sense than he wanted it to.

A young child walked barefoot amongst the tents, whistling as he sought his friends after a day of hard work. The child smiled, again and again, the muscles that pulled his lips easily worn as he wondered at the sensation. He had not had a reason to smile for such a very long time.

Suddenly a hand reached out from behind a tent, grabbing the child by the arm and pulling him behind a staked sheet of canvas.

"You listen here boy, and listen good. You stay away from that man. He's nothing but trouble."

The child's eyes widened for a moment, a brief lapse of fear before the instincts that carried him to survival took back over. The child wrenched his arm away and turned his face from his assailant, still keeping an eye out for trouble.

"Do you really think he's going to help you? Has anyone ever helped you?"

Tears welled up in the child's eyes. It has been a long time since he cried as well. His feet clumsily pushed him away from these hurtful words, when really he was trying to run.

"You stay away from that ranger, now, boy. If he was any good then why don't he have a home?"

The child finally found his legs again, as he turned to run away.

"You stay away from that man! All he is, is trouble!"

Teflor had gone to market and bought a pig. The kids didn't look like they've really had anything decent to eat in recent months, so he brought it back oinking and only once he hit camp did he realize that he had no idea of how to butcher hogs.

Hacking and sawing through bones, the ranger bloodied his apron. Not entirely an unfamiliar feeling, but everything was different about this. The kids had gathered to watch and he gave them a little anatomy lesson.

"This is the stomach."

Some of them giggled. Some of them ran away. Others turned green on the spot but kept watching.

Once finished, he left the pig with the older children to start cooking and wandered down towards the stream to clean himself up. Suddenly, the ranger froze as he caught several familiar scents in the air. Jasmine. Iceberries. Mint. And perhaps a subtle trace of spice and something else more familiar.

Cookies? It might have been. Teflor followed the scent, wading through the tent city until nearly stumbling over Lilira. Evil plans hatched in his mind to sneak up behind the bard and do mischievous things to her, until the smell of blood had Teflor looking down at his apron. Covered in bits of entrails and nearly dripping red, the ranger frowned as he stepped back into the shadows and made his way back to the creek.
