what is the best controller that i can get for the pc - ideally i want an original nintendo controller or an idea of how to mod one to be used on a pc, barring that - a super nintendo controller - followed by a playstation as my third choice - any ideas?

$350 to build that thing... can buy a Dreamcast for $20 and get the same results, since there's an emulator written for it. Only downside is having to use the DC controller... heh.

Gravis makes gamepads that emulate SNES and PSX controllers. I had a Gravis Gamepad way back when that was essentially identical to the 6-button SNES controller, and it cost me about 20 bucks. Have a look around, you'll find something.

Yup, gravis gamepad. I have the one that looks like a PS controler, and it works great for NES/SNES emulation on the pc too. :)

Teyaha, using and finding ROMS is mostly just a tedious task of wading through pop ups and banners and voting methods to find what you want, but not always.

recently, i had a few people staying over for a few days and since we are night people, pc games was a group event. i went and found a ton of roms and an emulator and set up a PC in one room for gaming - we all have spent days replaying great moments, struggling to remember a hidden door, what have you in some classics.

zelda, metroid, tetris, contra, and mike tyson's punch-out seem to be the leaders in popularity, but these people finding RPG's long since lost that they had never beaten are in heaven - Faxanadu, Dragon Warrior 2, Final Fantasy 1 & 3, Wizards & Warriors . . . needless to say this will last us til the middle of january break easily :P

the best site that i have right off-hand is www.drnes.com - he has many of the games i listed (which is not updated, i've found 12 more not on the list since :P) as well as the emulators and roms included.

i suggest using JNES or Nester as your emulator, and resist people who urge you to use nesticle. also, there are ROM editors when you tire of the games allowing you to make your own NES characters or objects or rooms with no more than microsoft Paint - or you can mess around and change the conversation strings - lots of potential fun there.

if you have any questions or anything let me know - im working to get as many NES games as i can then im going to update my SNES collection which has a paltry 400 or so titles.

ROMS are a great way to relive our memories, most are freely public domain, having long since been abandoned, and the rest - well, who cares. they will always just tell you delete the ROM after 24 hours if you don't have the cartridge - but my logic is that if you ever HAD the cartridge, then you are welcome to it, and any cartridge you had that has been since abandoned can substitute :D

I have to say, everyone who plays these old things should give Zanac a try.

What an incredible vertical scroller! Every numbered special weapon is worth specializing in (just get a lot of repeats of that number)... once you have them maxxed you think, how can i ever lose? And then you max a different one and you're like, man that old one is such crap, THIS is the new hotness... until you try out the next one.

Big fun blastums!

Personally I like the SNES emulator and roms. The emulator I use makes the snes games look and sound a hell of a lot better than they did on the old console unit, hahaha.

Lately I've been thinking about buying an Xbox. That was until I realized it was a 744MHz machine with an Ethernet controller and a hard drive. Then I realized, hey, I already have something like that but mine's even better (2.4GHz P4, with Ethernet/DSL and 512MB DDR RAM). So, why do I need to buy some lesser system to enjoy games? Based on this thread, I don't! I am pretty retro when it comes to gaming, enjoying classic Atari titles more than Counterstrike so perhaps I should just use the system I already have.

I guess the Xbox, PS2 systems do have a convenience factor in addition to nice controllers.

Opinions?

it's harder to control and work (well) on the pc than the xbox.

Although I want some of you guys on xbox live, I suggest you stick with your PC, Jhorr. From what it looks like, you would just be wasting money unless there is something specific on xbox or ps2 that you can't find on the PC.

As far as wanting to trade roms...I have a few you might want, kwirl. I think I have FF4 (or 5...can't remember) laying around somewhere. It was translated really nice, and the class system is really fun. Just PM me your email and I'll hook you up.

And rylan is right. Znes is the best snes emulator there is and I've tried virtually all of them.

Over here in these parts ROM discs are sold at roughly USD$2.99 a pop. The most popular ones are N64 and SNES/NES ROMs, ofc. Great fun, my favs are Gradius, Super Bomberman 3 and the Super Mario series.

i've checked a lot of rom sights, but square is heavily enforcing copyright on that game it's near impossible to find.

People still enforce copyrights on movies, music and books that are older.
I'd for sure not want to see anyone copying and playing the console games i worked on 8 years ago without them paying for it.

Well, in this case they are probably enforcing it so strongly because it was re-released on the playstation fairly recently.

Most old games aren't really available to purchase anymore though, so ROMs may be the only choice for anyone to play them.

I thought that Chrono Cross for playstation was the next game in the series after the old Chrono Trigger for super nintendo. Anyway, I would agree with you Jegzed, except that you can't go into a store any buy a new SNES console unit and new games anymore. The only way to get them is through online auctions or stores selling used games, so the game company who wrote it isn't going to be getting any royalties off it anyway, since no new cartridges are made anymore. Even if I wanted to pay for a new one, I can't So honestly I see no problem with using the PC emulator and downloading roms for snes, as its a obsolote system and the emulator gives far superior performance to the console.

exactly.

you can find just about any movie you want on dvd today still in production.

you cant find the original super mario bros. in a store anymore. and most of the carts you do find from that old wont even work anymore,or wont save your games anymore because the batteries are long ago toasted.

Yeah, chrono trigger is a bad arse game. I got the rom to finally beat it, but i lost interest again near the end. Probably the best RPG i've ever played. I always found it funny that the main char never talks the entire game.

It took me about 2 hours of searching to finally find this one, though. It is so hard to find because that's one of the major games that the copyrights are being enforced for because of it's original rarity. That and it has always been ranked as one of the best RPGs. That and the Lufia series is a toughie to locate anymore.

Actually.. You need to enforce copyrights, or you lose them. You may have concepts, characters, world-designs, logos etc that you want to use.

And yes, I've been a programmer for a few games for Genesis & SNES. I'd never see a penny of royalties though, since its a few companies and almost a decade of years ago. God.. I miss that company.. full overtime payment in the software industry.. and taxfree months...

Its a "victimless" crime to download old ROM's though.. But the step is not far to stealing current games.

I think you're confusing copyright and trademark, you can't lose your copyright, it's yours by law until the specified term expires, which is now an insanely long time partly thanks to the evil that is Disney. Trademarks on the other hand, have to be actively enforced or you can lose them. The idea being: if you don't protect your brand from other people using it - then you can't really claim it's a representative symbol of your specific company.

Ahh, a fellow zanac fan. Here's a link to my Zanac web site: http://www.geocities.com/TimesSquare/Castle/6785/

Also, be sure to get ZanacXZanac, a japanese playstation 1 import. It is quite uber, by far my most favorite game ever. Compile has gone bankrupt so you'll have to find it on ebay. Oh, and they also recently (before they went bankrupt) ported Zanac to the palm pilot. It was available by download only, so I'm not sure where you would find it. I have a copy of the demo.
