Recruiting (And Bringing Back the oldies!)

Holy crap, some of these lists in the "immortals" thread has brought back memories. People I haven't thought about or seen in years.

One thought did occur to me. Certainly there are people around that know how to contact some of these folks and if nothing else, let them know that Toril is still around.

If we spent half the time going through our address books, icq lists, aim buddy lists, or hooking up with old friends as we do bitching about how the good old days are gone, I wonder if we wouldn't see some of these folks return and also get us some new folks

The vote thread has gotten alot of folks to vote for the mud, I think thats great, so this thread is for posting about ex-players that you've emailed, IM'd, phoned, whatever and told them the game is still around or asked them to play. As well as for new players you have at least told about Toril.

Seriously, I know i'm going to dig up my old icq list when I get home and maybe go through my e-mail address book and send some messages to some old players and some potential recruits. The worst that can happen is a few bounced emails or someone saying no.

I'd like to hear about anyone else doing the same.

I do not have any people on my lists anymore, but if you want to do this... I would be interested... I need a break from WoW anyway :)

I played here since before the split (Duris/Soj) and even after, but went to Duris not long after. Lots of these old names also went to Duris, and I got to know them there.

I noticed Sao's name on the list, and I'm assuming it's the same guy. He passed away about a month ago sadly- I thought anyone who might've known him once would like to know.

I spoke with Knetzar a few years ago, but he said that he wanted to move on to other things. I tried to hunt Nerzul down, but every last contact I found that I thought was him claimed to be someone else.

It sucks to hear about players passing away, even if I didn't know them :( On Toril especially, one person's death diminishes us all (is it okay if I appropriate Donne? I hope so.)

I think it would take a complete overhaul of the melee system to entice me to start playing again. I'm turned off primarily because of Toril's heavy focus on arcane caster classes at the high levels. Tanks have a very narrow role overall, and hitters have almost no significance at all.

Playing a Ranger during S2 was a fairly limited experience. 95% of fights involved either assisting the tank or afire <mob>. Now and then I'd get called upon to backup bash or rescue Invokers "just in case"... usually in a party with 2 Warriors, me, and 12 casters. And in 99% of fights, I felt like my damage output was almost completely inconsequential to the outcome of the fight (and I was one of the better dressed hitters at the time). Jani's Force Missiles outdamaged my bow by a factor of at least 1.5:1 against a single target. Against zone rooms with 10 mobs, there was almost no point in engaging in combat at all.

I haven't seriously played Toril in years, but I can't imagine it's any different now. Rogues have an out-of-combat function in spank recovery, which helps them stay interesting and relevant. However, and correct me if I'm wrong, even this function is at least partially (if not completely) shared by Illusionists.

If there ever comes a time when I can look at a melee class on Toril as something other than a meat shield or a "fun roleplay class," then I might consider returning. However, as I made a point to mention in another thread, I don't feel that there is anything big coming in Toril's near future. Shev has talked about "melee changes" for a little while now, and maybe when the time is right and the code is in, I'll give it another try. But Gormal tried to pull me back in about two months ago... he gave me 40 damroll worth of equipment, told me to reroll as a ranger, finished my Windsong quest, and away I went. I got as high as level 16 before the futility and irrelevance I felt as a Ranger during Sojourn 2 came flooding back. It's very discouraging to start a character knowing full well that his role in groups at high levels will be virtually nonexistant.

Rogues also have Khanjari now. It balanced hitters for all time by allowing the rogue to get stackable vit and berserk procs. Rogues can outdamage vokers on single target now (Kiryan demonstrated this beautifully when we did BC with 3? Khanjari wielding rogues) and beat it down like an ugly kid, as compared to when we went in with 4 invokers.

I'd love to have you back Rags, if for no other reason than to be able to poke fun at you via gsay and ooc :p

I deliberately left Khanjari out of my post. My opinion on this item mirrors that of many other players in the community, and as such, I see no reason to contribute to the already extensive library that has been said about it in the past.

We've been promised melee upgrades and changes since before Soj split from Kris. We were promised the EQ changes would help melee's out and bring them more in line with casters. I have nothing against the imms running the MUD personally, but I do not support the changes made and lack of focus so I voted with my feet and left. Not much could bring me back now, so Sojourn will always be a place of memories to me.
