Your work security policies

Postby Dalar » Thu Nov 10, 2005 6:41 pm

Was curious, what kind of computer security policies do you guys have at your workplace?

I am a temp. At my last job at a bank I was required to sign a form to not: post any inflamatory comments while on their network, visit porn and to limit personal use. When leaving my desk I had to lock up the computer and if I didn't my boss would get pissed. At my current job I signed nothing. It is an insurance provider. I don't have to lock up my computer. There is a content blocker I have set off numerous times cause I clicked on links people posted here; yet, I have received no notices from IT or my supervisor.

By lock up, do you mean hitting ctrl+alt+del and clicking on lock computer?

We've got a Content Blocker called "SuperScout" that jumps up when I click on something that it doesn't think I should. Then it sends a message to IT with a fingerprint of which computer did it and what website it was. (Doesn't seem to work as well for my Mac, but I still can't open certain sites).

The company has the right to go through and check my internet useage and emails etc.

I know of only 1 person who has been fired in the past 2 years for internet offenses, but he was looking at porn for 7 hours out of the day :)
Nerox tells you 'Good deal, the other tanks I have don't wanna do it, and since your my special suicidal tank i figure you don't mind one bit!'

Alurissi tells you 'aren't you susposed to get sick or something and not beable to make tia so i can go? :P'

We're pretty free and open. I have basically unlimited internet use, as long as shit gets done. Other than not having the access to run program installers on my PC, I can do pretty much whatever I need/want to do.

I'm a system/domain admin. I can do whatever I want as long as it doesn't blatently involve prOn for long periods of time.

Everything is locked down from the internet in, but anything can go out. Our wireless network is firewalled off from everything else. Our public PCs are V-LANed off from everything else on the network. Systems require long/complex passwords.

Security policies? well....we are left to our own devices here. I can look at porn, read webcomics, mud all day and chat in the message boards if I so choose. It just so happens that I don't look at porn.

IT survey:

1. What company do you work for? How many employees are in your office?
2. Does your company have an internal IT staff?
3. Does your company place any restrictions on your computer such as security policies Example: can you install programs yourself?
4. Does your company have any restrictions on your Internet usage? Examples: Are some sites blocked by a content blocker? Does your company say “Internet for business use only” etc.

Feel free to reply to this!

1. What company do you work for? How many employees are in your office?
a: Musictoday.com About 30 in this office, about 140 in this building;
--------------
2. Does your company have an internal IT staff?
a: Yep
--------------
3. Does your company place any restrictions on your computer such as security policies Example: can you install programs yourself?
a: Can install whatever programs and usb hardware I want without approval.
--------------
4. Does your company have any restrictions on your Internet usage? Examples: Are some sites blocked by a content blocker? Does your company say “Internet for business use only” etc.
a: No blockage. I can do anything as far as I know. Everyone in the office has mytunes linked up to share music, the guy in the cube next to me is running a file server, I see people using shareaza to get movies to watch in the slow times. As long as we are productive (get what work we have presented to us done) we're golden.

Kallinar, any idea what kind of security you guys have then? Has there even been a problem with getting viruses and infecting the whole network?

Well every computer has an individual copy of Officescan and Adaware pro that both run when you bootup. Officescan has stopped every virus that has tried to get on my computer thus far. Intranetwork sharing is shut off but the ftp ports and whatnot remain open for the stuff like mytunes and gaming. I've never spoken to the IT guys but I do know that the main servers are not here in this building, so the iT staff here are just here to help people that screw up their workstations.

And if you want my job ya gotta move to Charlottesville heh.
