A Minute's Silence for the hanging?

Postby ssar » Wed Nov 30, 2005 10:03 pm

"(Australian) Prime Minister John Howard ruled out a national minute's silence on the day Nguyen Tuong Van is hanged."

Apparently they were considering announcing a national 1 minute's silence at 09:00 (Australian) Eastern Daylight Savings Time - the time he is due to be hanged.

This is freaking ridiculous.
A minute's silence is ONLY to pay RESPECT to someone lost or some genuinely very tragic event.

The culling of a proven drug runner of a significant amount of hard drugs in a country where such harsh laws have been clearly obvious for decades in no way comes close to warranting this, or the amount of taime and resources our government has put into it either.

I don't agree with hanging itself (but do beleive there is a place for the death penalty in this world), and sure it's tragic for the family, but as the saying goes: "Don't do the crime if you can't do the time."

Link the news article when you post news articles. Also, I don't see what the big deal is. People ask for stupid shit from the government all the time.

I think all the time, effort and attention have more to do with political maneuvering than the ethical question of the hanging. What it comes down to is two countries with mutually exclusive laws and questionable jurisdiction. It then becomes a matter of who is in charge politically. Obviously, with a hot-button issue like capital punishment, you'll attract a bunch of attention from NGOs and concerned citizens, but the muscle is being flexed on a international politics level, imo.

As much as I disagree with capital punishment, the idea of being immune to the "law of the land" based on one's country of origin is nonsense.

Guilty or not, they are taking somebodies life. Anytime somebody is killed on purpose by the government, people ought to be made aware of it ïn a direct, confrontational manner, and ethically speaking, I would hope the *least* they would do is devote some thought to the matter. Especially in a democratic country where the gov. is acting with the express authority of the people.

Anything less is undermining the value of human life and the seriousness of the issue at hand.

There is still a country that hangs its criminals? I must say I approve.

oh, and fyi - 26 grams is not a 'significant' amount. thats like me and 3 friends having a hard week.

unless of course it was pure, which it probably was, in which case its gonna get a neighborhood smashed for a week, but its not like he had boats waiting full of crap

It was almost 400 grams of heroin, enough for about 27,000 doses or "hits".

Oh, and the meaning of life is 42, I wonder if that is it's value as well?

There's still a state or two that can hang people, if I'm not mistaken. Tho I could be confusing things with the firing squad. Been a few days since I read that article..

Dalar, the only thing that surprised me about your post was the time it took you to post it. God forbid you find yourself ever judged by people as ignorant and malign as yourself, should you ever find yourself falsely or justly accused of a 'capital' offense.

New Hampshire and Washington currently offer hanging as an authorized method of execution. They both also have lethal injection as an alternative.

Maybe they should have requested a minute of the tune "King Kong the Witch is Dead" instead?

oops! confused ounces and grams! my bad! stupid faulty french metric system. thank god the NFL is single-handedly preventing america from converting to the metric system, thus preventing the entire free world from using the horrid metric system.

"Michael Vick rushed for 40 meters!"
"What the fuck is a meter?"

"Cadillac scrambles for another 35 yards!"
"God bless America!"
