Apparently the local pilot couldnt get aboard or something (captain didnt wait for him to arrive someone said elsewhere) and thus was not navigating the ship in this time, the normal ship's captain was.
And without the local knowledge he must have gotten a tad too close to the shallows.
Ouch.
