Frank Miller's 300

Postby ssar » Sat Apr 07, 2007 6:36 am

Saw this this arvo at the local Greater Union Cinema on the "Senstadium Mega-Screen" (which I always like to try and ensure the movie/session I wanna watch is being shown on if poss.)

The movie: Outstanding, and better than I expected.

I was keeping my pre-movie opinions and expectations quite low and basic, which generally helps I find. But regardless of that I really was very impressed with most of this movie.

Absolutely wonderful usage of modern day CGI/animation & technology blended with footage of real people.

Some really great battle and fight scenes, with some comic touches and a couple of heavy/metal music scores put in which all worked well, for mine.

I will definitely watch this again someday.

I just read a review of it that described it as the perfect link between ultra violent action and gay beefcake porn. Just what we have been looking for eh? :)

For some reason it just seemed too over the top to me, even for Frank Miller. I understand what he's trying to do, but I found myself irritated at the constant slow-motion epic pose shots (ever 5 seconds). I plan on giving it a second try, but I really didn't get that much enjoyment out of it. I did like how every Spartan woman has enormous and constantly erect nipples.

Yeah, pretty much what Gormal said. Nice visuals, but a little too much of, ooh look how cool this shot is! etc..etc..

Very weak on the story and the characters....Frankly I was a bit bored. Still a decent movie tho. Much better than Mission to Mars.

Err... did you go in expecting something different? Seriously, I really don't get why some people say things like that about movies like this. It's not meant to have a strong storyline. Frankly, what storyline they did have, with Leonidas' wife, dragged the movie down a little.

ok i was very disappointed with this movie, why?

because the entire thing was in slow motion. even when it was just showing a person's face for 5 minutes. i mean, it was TOOOOOO SLOW MO, it could have used more normal speed scenes.

hm...you know...I loved the slow motion. The images of the blood splattering in beautiful artistic frames as it hit those firm, smooth, bare chests that filled the movie with amazing scenery....

oh wait...I'm getting lost again....and let a bit of drool fall...

I thought it was a great movie, with GREAT violence...blood...

I (as a female) loved the portrayal of the husband/wife relationship and the respect that was there...even if the reality of it is a bit different. It was based on a comic, it had a comic style that I thought was done beautifully and the music was a great mix of modern and epic. Most of the people I know loved everything in it...although a few of the guys made comments about all the many bare chests that were not womenly being more prominent :P

Lol, I thought the storyline with the wife hurt the movie as well. Look, this is a cutt'em up movie. People that like B movies don't go to a B movie and get mad when the acting wasn't oscar worthy. The fact that the acting is shitty is probably why the person likes B movies in the first place. In the same fashion, people wanted a gore movie with fantastic scenery and special effects. That is what they delivered. That is what they advertised it as. If you went to this movie expecting anything else and getting let down, it's not the movies fault.

And I'm not trying to put anybody's opinions down here. If you didn't like it, fine, but don't put it down because it wasn't something it was never supposed to be. I mean, it'd be like me going to see Roots and saying, "well, it was ok, but it wasn't very funny. It would have been better had they added a character for comic relief or put in more slap-stick and physical comedy scenes in it. It was just too depressing. I give it a 4/10"

I liked most of the slow-mo.

There were a couple that made me kinda think, wtf?

But after seeing the scene thru, each time I considered it done well.
