Cleaning up your own damn messes, revisited

Postby Deshana » Wed Aug 11, 2004 7:25 am

Can someone tell me, why it is so hard to say on a channel, "Can someone help me clean up after myself?"

WHY is this so godsbedamned hard? Tonight I've had to kill the Myth drannor dretch, who had already managed to kill a newbie. Mr Dretch was out for a stroll on BGR/Nightfall, and I count myself greatful his lady friend Marilith wasn't with him. Thanks to Lintrals group maspel, crumar linsow and mirlantharn, it died.

no more then ten minutes after I assured myself that Marilith was where she belonged, out comes a request for cr help in Ice Crag. Why? Someone decided to try to twink werewolves, got the wolves. and left.
No warnings, or otherwise. just left.
Kudos to Ilashi Weylarii Ladak Amolol Linsow Engra Ridmar and especially Zarel who couldn't even group with us for cleaning up that mess.

So I ask again, WHY THE HELL DO PEOPLE LEAAVE THEIR MESSES TO KILL OTHER PEOPLE??!

I have ranted on this before, and for the same reasons. Last time it was Marilith dretch and pyrohydra in the same day.
Toril is attempting to become a more newbie friendly place. leaving clots of agro high level mobs in places newbies go is NOT newbie or even low level twinks (like me) friendly. So why does it happen? Its not your hide so who the hell cares? Far as I'm concerned stuff like this is pkill.

Clean up after yourselves. Ask for help, you will eventually get it. Don't just leave it laying around like camel dung in calimport. OK?
Its not that much to ask.

Deshana, Ayra, Et all.

On one hand, i agree. you make a mess, you clean it up.

On the other hand, perhaps as an RP stunt, one has left a "trap" for
others.

Also, to quote Benke? (sp) from mallrats:
"You keep looking ahead, or you risk shock and damage"
or something to that effect. I suppose "look before you leap" is
more to the point. Wandering around this mud is way too... safe.
Unless you are of an opposing alignment and happen to run into
the paladins (which are aggro quest mobs, figure that out) or
run into the priestesses, you don't have much to worry about
along the main roads. I think the displacer beast is even out of
the way enough that only if you are careless will you run into it.

So yes, please clean up after yourself, but also, keep an eye out where
you are walking. sheesh.

I don't buy that "RP to leave a trap" stuff, thats just an excuse for jerks to PK in a non-PK mud.

Agree about the Pally groups, especially when they load in newbie areas. (Faerie forest east of TP, anyone?)

Beshaba priestesses aren't aggro anymore, but I think they were way worse than the pally groups anyway. The head priestess pwned me by 800 hps in one round by herself before I could flee.

Please see http://www.torilmud.org:8080/phpBB2/vie ... hp?t=14192 regarding using RP to justify actions.

I hope you at least informed the Imms.

I recall one time when I was in a group helping quest the gith sword for someone, can't remember who. Somehow the proc caused a gith to load on Evermeet slaying hapless noob elves everywhere and somehow the mob was aggro to everyone who had been in the group helping quest the sword, even though they weren't present when this sword must have procced later on. I hope this sort of thing was fixed by the Imms 'cause even though I wasn't involved in creating the mess I still felt guilty.

Newbie friendly is one thing... but new players also have to learn to play toril. Toril was created with harsh conditions it has to bring out the very best in dedecated players... It is part of the reason this mud is so successful in bringing out extremely good players. I have gone to other muds and they just don't bring the challege that toril brings. I agree people should clean up their messes.. but unfortunately from time to time this messy kidd is gonna be playing... and who isn't to say that it wasn't one of those noobs that lured out the deamons. Anyway ranting about this kinda thing is a waste of breath..

So I could say, get some dragons into WD and have them kill lots of people and when I'm about to be deleted/stripped of EQ say 'it was an rp stunt'?

I don't think I can say I have heard a quote-unquote "good player" ever say they got good by running into someone else's clutter as a noob. Just throwing that out there.

Like the Black Knight in the Goblin Hovel outside of DK in Mir. I've died (I'm lvl 16) a few times at the hands of that aggor. It is always because someone leave his door open and visable, and I end up fleeing right into him.

Even though I'm not high level, I try and make a point to clean as I go. For example, I always try to close the trapdoor to said hovel so the mobs don't go wandering around Mir.

I thought it was a fun and unusual, if inconvenient, gaming experience. More features like this in the mud would be a blast.

I have to agree here. Yeah it sucks to get killed but that is part of the game. Personally I feel the game needs more events like this to shake things up. Add a little adventure to the normal grind. Let loose a big nasty in the middle of WD and see how many people will come back from their 20 hour afk session to find a corpse. We are too complacent! We need to develope our own Homeland Security for the mud!

It's one thing for low levels to not always be "safe". But a Marilith? Dretch? Pyrohydra? Give me a break.

*quoting a bumpersticker* SHIT HAPPENS

If you want to teach newbies about surviving the harshness of Toril, then put low level aggros that a newbie can survive against for a few rounds to give them a chance to flee. If I'm level 15 and I run across a level 20-25 aggro that's starts to beat on me, I at least have a chance to get the hell out, get a group of like level people, and tackle the sob. Or at least if I die and the mob sits, I can chance a CR without getting creamed every time. But a high level demon that can kill a level 15 base eq newbie with a weak fart? That's ridiculous.

I agree but this isn't the subject really. Those big ass monsters are not always there. They end up there by accident or due to an event. No one would put that Gith on EM as part of the zone. It just happened at that time. The orc captain on the road up north is there by design. It just means that people have to be more cautious and pay attention. You get killed by a big demon out at TP I'd be thinking Holy Shit and not pissing and moaning about some dumbass who brought him there. But that is just me. I guess the point I am trying to make is that it doesn't happen all the time and mostly not on purpose but when it does happen, live with it and enjoy it for what it is.

Grizz, there's a big difference between you or I running into these mobs and getting our asses kicked and the same thing happening to a new player who this may be one of their first experiences on this mud. You and I may curse, bitch and moan and get a group together to help smite. Some newbies may use the newbie channel to solicit help after dying. But other newbies may just walk away either sickened or completely disheartened and discouraged, never to return. That is the subject, I'm afraid. Like it or lump it, some of us do get easily discouraged. Character flaw? Maybe, but that doesn't mean that person won't become a great player if given the chance early on. With a mud that could always use a higher pbase we should be concerned with so-called little things like these that could potentially cost us players. Cleaning up your mess, even if it was accidental, is generally not difficult. People are always willing to help, it's just a matter of realizing no one's gonna curse you out (maybe chuckle a little!) and ask for the necessary help. That's something any one of us more experienced, confident players should be able to do with ease.

No no, I understand where you are coming from and I agree with you, really I do. I guess my main point is that it isn't that often, almost rare infact, that these events take place.

Also, think about it from a vetrens view. Quickly organizing a group to go kill the foul beast at TP to save the townsfolk. That's just good fun. Like I said though, these things are few and far between imho.

Hell, i know a lot of critters that coulda killed a newbie just as fast, and
an equal number of paces from the city. Yes BGR is one of those
zones that the low-mid level use for getting exp, but would it have
been any different if it were, i dunno, a BIGASS white polar bear
that is on the road up north rather regularly?

Sure it sucks that people don't clean up, but there has to be at least SOME
danger out there. And with all the 50+ and their alts around, a few
shouts in waterdeep will wake the afk, and get the foul beast slain.
Minor inconvenience at best.

Delmair's elitest, better than everyone attitude strikes again.

I think he would be happy if he got to play the mud all by himself, so that no one can do the zones before he wants to, and he wins all the bids!

You know, the mud is already difficult enough to get into, those who don't know their way around. Killing off new player's characters their first time away from WD doesn't help at all.

Nor does killing off our older players in areas that are though of to be safe.

The mud is anti-exploration as it is. Extremely aggressive mobiles litter the realms and high level zones often have little introduction. Take MD for instance. Several steps north of the standing stone, and you're only told that you're approaching MD. Sounds harmless so far. Then splat.

This is a minor inconvenience for me, sure. I know how to CR naked, and what I'm doing. But for your midlevel player just looking around to see what's east of nightfall trail, this is not an attractive feature of the mud.

Hasn't anyone noticed that no one seems to know anything about the mud anymore? Most of even higher level players stick to WD and only venture forth when dragged along with a zoning group. These people aren't adventueres. They're scared little rabbits that won't go down any half suspicious looking path without a minor army.

And that's because they were shown early on that exploration is a bad idea. If this is what we're trying to convey as a community, so be it, but if we want to encourage players to go out own their own more, to see the world and enjoy it...

There needs to be changes and the players have to pitch in.

If you drag a huge agro mob out onto nightfall trail, clean it up. Hell, if I'm on and you have to go, ask me to clean it up. While there should be risks to exploring, I don't consider random instant death to be a very good one.

I didn't think his post was elitist, but maybe I'm partial to guildmates. There are one or two vociferous folks who play the game who I would say are much worse than him.

Otherwise, i agree with your general sentiment, Teflor. :D

As a Druid, and still lost :) I explore often solo, as I don't group but once in a rare while. I'm still finding new places but now it seems i'm stuck in a place where it's either too easy or too hard a zone to enter and nothing I find seems "inbetween" at level 38. As a general rule I don't ask directions except from 2 people that I do talk to in Mud who welcomed me, it seems alot of times it's not right to ask as in the replies that you get.. the people act as if you're a nuisance and you have wasted their time.

As for messes of Huge Mobs, yes I have ran into my share of them with unfortunate outcomes. It would be nice for people to "clean up" so to speak, but nowdays I simply look as I go room to room simply for safety.

Shrug, my 2 cents.

Elitist? funny shit.

Far from it actually. As far as winning bids, only if it fits my color
scheme and is better than what i have.

I don't appreciate the personal attacks, honestly. Not that i am personally
hurt by your opinion of me, just rather amused that you think you know
me. I may have an attitude that comes off as "harsh" to newbies, but
you ever met a drill sergeant that people LIKED?! Its not a candy coated
world out there, the best time to stop pretending it is, is NOW. The
realms are supposed to be exciting, filled with adventure, mystery, and
occasionally a good ass-kicking. I stated a plenty good reason above as
to why these deaths aren't a huge deal. If we had just wiped, and nobody
could help CR, yeah, it might be kinda a pain in the ass. But the reality is
there are a good number of 45+ level characters, or their alts, on at
almost any hour. CR's are cake now, most of the time you just have to
ask. Perhaps more people should use Teklar's technique as he stated
above. Look before you leap!

Delmair's not elitist, he's just cranky from being on semi-permanent retirement, now that the Care Bears have lost much of their popularity. You can still catch him occasionally, riding his My Pretty Pony down from Care-a-Lot.

Seriously Tef, if ya actually knew delmair he's not elitest a bit bitter and quiet until he yells but hey. what can ya do about a grumpy old man? It's ok seriously i do understand that it sucks when a noobie walks into marilith or some mob wandering, heck i've walked into them before and died but the thing is there's agro's everywhere even if you go to SS and stop by gc you can get owned, i'm pretty sure everyone on the mud has died in gc before. But that's one thing. it's totally different to be lvl 10 ask where you can exp be told to go e of tp you get to first room of bgr and get owned by some dragon or marilith.

Bottom line is don't be an jackass if you pull a huge mob out get it killed and have a nice day.

Actually, Pril, I think you got a bit of it too.

While to some of you all it's a 'minor inconvenience' or 'not a big deal', it's beacuse you all are used to this.

In the meanwhile, incidents such as this are leading to new character deletions, and abandonment by what might have been otherwise fine players.

I am not sure how often these messes have been occuring but i doubt it is more than once a week. Reguardless, I don't think that making it easier is the solution though... The reason Toril is such a great mud is because it is so dangerous. Go play on a candy mud if you want is half my attitude cause i like toril hardcore. But i can understand the noobie point of view as i was once there.. I think best thing is to encourage newbies more so that they realize what they are getting into when playing this mud... otherwise we might aswell turn this mud into candyland...

yes teflor i have a HUGE elitest attitude. I am THOR bow before me mortals or i shall smite you with lighting from my arse! :p

sorry couldn't pass it up :p

look pretty much anyone who has made it somewhere on the mud will have the same attitude. It sucks when people don't clean up their messes but it happens. So if you make a mess clean it up. If you get hit by a mess get over it nothing you can really do.

teff delmair whines about rangers more than anybody else i know... yes even me... look delmair as a non attack and a standoffish veiw of your overall attitude it seems to me that you go out of your way to try and be an arse to many people... take a step back and look at what is being said.. alot of what you classify as whining is actually an attempt at throwing some improvement ideas out there. no rangers arent asking to be uber... no ranger has ever asked to be the ultimate... but rangers have tried to get a few upgrades going there way... now to get back on the topic of the post.

as said there isnt always an option to take care of "messes" so would it be possible to code a way for players to make signs that could be posted about... sothat if there is a large aggro on BGR or north of WD or a pali group is roaming on the path from ghore to DK there is at least a little notice? baybe this would help prevent some of the problems.. and no im not talking about writing a message on paper and dropping the paper. most people dont look at that... im thinking more along the lines of a sign post that adds something to the room descriptio.... maybe premade signs that can be dropped...

a sign has been stuck here in the ground by a traveler , it reads AGRESSIVE BEASTS AHEAD!

Shouldn't that be the disclaimer page that loads before you get to the BBS?

teflor the ranger wrote:The mud is anti-exploration as it is. Extremely aggressive mobiles litter the realms and high level zones often have little introduction. Take MD for instance. Several steps north of the standing stone, and you're only told that you're approaching MD. Sounds harmless so far. Then splat.

I have never been, by any means, an elite player, but I have never had a problem exploring or getting around. You just have to be on your toes, and look around you when you are on unfamiliar grounds.

That said, I remember having to put together a cr group for a lil warrior who somehow found his way all the way to the demons in MD. I was like "Why couldn't you have stumbled in on the dracolich instead?"

teflor the ranger wrote:This is a minor inconvenience for me, sure. I know how to CR naked, and what I'm doing. But for your midlevel player just looking around to see what's east of nightfall trail, this is not an attractive feature of the mud.

Don't forget that nasty little beasty up by Ulric... Seen plenty a noob die screaming on nightfall in his teeth.

teflor the ranger wrote:Hasn't anyone noticed that no one seems to know anything about the mud anymore? Most of even higher level players stick to WD and only venture forth when dragged along with a zoning group. These people aren't adventueres. They're scared little rabbits that won't go down any half suspicious looking path without a minor army.

Are you suggesting that we set up manditory course? Like exploration 101 and as your final assignment you need to map the whole of the trollbark yourself at level 35? (just kidding)

I dunno, the mud has changed a lot, I remember when I could look at the level 50 list and only see the best of the best of the best...

Touchy Topic =p

Cleaning up messes is just common courtesy. A level 50 or even 40 getting whacked by a mob out of place is ok, you get a group you kill it. You feel better. A level 10 noob, 20 or even 30 is gonna get discouraged and leave. Low level noobs especially probably wont even know what happened, or where to go back to get their corpse. Many are too proud or dont care to ask for help, they can go play a less stressful game instead.

We have to offer things to players that they cant get from an mmorpg or any other game. Muds are hard to learn, even harder to master.

Its a challenge? Explain to me how getting whacked by a mob that you have not a chance in hell of beating, no matter how strategic you get going to teach you anything? What's it going to teach a newbie?

It might teach them to be more careful, but when the mob is out of place and it was never in the area before that was supposed to be safe that kinda makes no sense, especially to the victim.

Being careful is often a lesson learned and needed in exploring new ground, sadly enough many newbies leave because they know not that displacer beast is waiting around the corner to kill them. They die, they leave.

With the numbers dwindling, we have to perfrom pbase growing manuevers sometime. But before we do that, maybe we should keep the newbies we have, and mop up the mobs you let loose.
