Spell stutter rate

Postby selerial » Thu Apr 21, 2005 12:14 am

I'm curious as to whether the spell stutter rate might be looked at, and perhaps a decrease applied. I have been somewhat frustrated of late with the fact that about one in four of my four 10th circle spells seems to stutter. I don't have hard stats, but the premise that I am thinking under is that a level 50 elementalist which has 99 spellcast_elemental *and* 90 specialize_elemental should probably be able to cast elemental spells with a fair amount of confidence. This, however, is often not the case. Perhaps a stutter save bonus could be applied to the various specialize_x skills?

For some reason, as soon as I hit lvl 44? I've also noticed a dramatic increase in missed earthblood casts.

Curious as to whether or not something funny is occuring.

I believe the standard failure rate for top circle spells is around 5%. So if you cast 4 of them, chances are a little less than 20% that at least one of them will abort.

Assuming 5%:
1 fail = 1/20 * 19/20^3 * 4 = 17.1475%
2 fails = 1/20^2 * 19/20^2 * 6 = 1.35375%
3 fails = 1/20^3 * 19/20 * 4 = 0.0475%
4 fails = 1/20^4 = 0.000625%
no fails = 19/20^4 = 81.450625%

I think part of the perceived increased earthblood failure rate is simply psychological, that you can cast more of them in rapid succession, so you'll see more failures in the same 10 second period than when you were lower level, when you could only cast one, remem, repeat. If there is something funny going on, definitely record results and post them.

Don't know if this is just me, but in the last week or so, I seem to have started failing 10th circle spells (and QC) more.

There has been no code update related to the fail rate of spells. Just victim of random chance I'm afraid.

Darn those streaky dice...

Had quite a mess w/ both nek and my mental lately. Had a streak w/ nek where something like 7/10 10ths stuttered. (including 3 in a row.)
And had a really ugly streak w/ the mental where I missed 28pwb's in a row, and a whole boatload of iceT's.

I hear that singing your spells can really help with a stuttering problem.
