Question about Chromatic Orb.

Postby Lalan » Wed Jun 01, 2005 7:26 am

So it goes something like this:

< 183h/183H 191p/191P 100v/100V >
< T: Kazis TC: excellent E: grey EC: small wounds P: std >
You complete your spell...
You hurl a small orb of wildy shifting colors at a grey hobgoblin!
A grey hobgoblin is bathed in a an explosion of black light and is blinded!
A grey hobgoblin is bathed in a an explosion of turquoise light and appears weaker!

< 183h/183H 191p/191P 100v/100V >
< T: Kazis TC: excellent E: grey EC: small wounds P: std >
You slash a grey hobgoblin hard.
A grey hobgoblin misses you with its punch.

< 183h/183H 191p/191P 100v/100V >
< T: Kazis TC: excellent E: grey EC: excellent P: std > cast 'chro or' grey

At first I thought they were just healing to full between ticks or something, but this seems to happen quite often when I cast Chromatic Orb. I first started noticing it on the Lizard Men near Scardale. then on these guys and on the buffalos (which ended in my death three or four times). They always seem to go from small wounds back to excellent. Is this just bad luck or is something wrong? (This is the first time I caught this in a log, I will try and catch a few more.)

Thanks,
Lalan/Kazis

Well off the top of my head, buffs can't heal that much (small to excellent) in a tick or 2. (heck, most mobs, even <10 fodder won't heal that quickly.)

So, maybe something's borked w/ the spell, or it has an unadvertised sideaffect?

My guess would be
A grey hobgoblin is bathed in a an explosion of turquoise light and appears weaker!

is lowering it's con and if it happens to drop past a notch then max hp drops, and if happens to drop enough to be lower than it's current hp, it will look unhurt.

So for that proc part of the spell, it's basically useless I assume?

No, actually it's pretty useful for low-midlevel exping. It will keep a mob from healing to full health (as defined as their full hp before you began fighting them) because their con is lower so their "new" full hp is lower than what it was at the start of battle. Too, just as when the vit spell cast on you goes out, the mob's hp's above its newly-set max hp will drain away over time until it hits the new max hp.

That's the best I can explain it at the moment, hope it helps!

Ahh, that makes some logical sense now. I did not even think about that until I saw it on the screen.

Thanks Ssyrth and Birile.

But when you're high level and can cast chromatic orb... you could just cast PWB instead! i love the orb-spell cause it looks cool. mini-prism!!! (too bad you can't cast it at other players any longer ;))
