First off, how does one backstab when the caster is looking right at you. Secondly, how does one have the reflexes to freaking spontaneously be behind someone and attempt to stab them while someone is merely uttering a single word?

PWB should have virtually no cast time. Let alone for a mob to bash, stab, trip, etc..which they very much do. I don't get it.

You weren't engaged but it became agro. I imagine the code checked that it was agro and not engaged so it backstabbed you.

If it didn't have a cast time, it would be too powerful.

not zero cast time. I mean when you enter bash or stab, it's instant. Having zero time sort of is what I mean, but not sure exactly. The lag after casting seems appropriate.

I'd say the mob saw you casting an aggressive spell (cant players see a mob casting an aggressive spell too?) and just beat you to the stab via innate bac thillendel .. and since after the cast he he was already engaged he didnt need to target

What Lathander said is correct--the mob is a rogue mob which is aggro to evilrace, and possibly even evil alignment.

In other words, if you fit that description, the fact that you uttered one word or even thought it was a good idea to fight him has nothing to do with it--being in the room with him was the issue.

Isn't the act of casting an offensive spell considered engaging the mob (indirectly) by the code? My guess is that when you started chanting, it agro'd the mob which was still out of combat at the time of chanting so it had the ability to backstab per code rules (not actually in combat). Then your spell went off which would have put you in combat.
