Quest Items

Postby Grizz » Mon Aug 16, 2004 6:41 pm

I was thinking that one way to help keep quest items from changing hands would be to make them !drop and Transient. I don't know if this is really a problem anyhow though it would keep some things from making it to an alt or being sold. Bah *shrug* what do I know anyhow.

yes, but !drop would also make it so A) you couldn't give it to the quest
mob, and b) if you got remove cursed, poof! all go bye bye. not to
mention that they'd either have to always be in your storage or inventory.

Secondly, this nodrop flag can be removed with a very common scroll
available in the dwarf hometown.

As much as i like the idea, unfortunately, that would not be a way of
going about achieving the goal. Having quest steps hard-saved to
someones pfile, however, would. Dunno how much coding this would
require, but one could have a "log" available to them of what else
they need to bring to what quest mob. and this "log" could possibly
be saved much like however mmail accounts are done? just a thought.

I was thinking about more of the end item. The final toy that you get like a Holy/Unholy Avenger or something like that. That would mean ofcourse that you couldn't have an end item that required other end items as componants. Maybe it could be used on certain big end items like the Kanjari or the Avengers?

I know of at least one such item (yes, one of the ones you listed) that is actually used in another quest, which means you have to turn it in to a mob.

True, I know that there are items out there that are required componants for other quests. If what I suggest were to work changes would have to be made in those quests. Which overall isn't a bad thing I think.

I'm amazed that you can say that while knowing nothing of those quests, but you are of course entitled to your opinion.

More to the point, there are a tremendous number of quests that have "subquests." If every single end item were to be flagged NODROP TRANSIENT, the entire quest system would have to be overhauled. The alternative to that is to flag individual powerful rewards NODROP TRANSIENT - which is the system we already have.

Nodrop transient items would backfire for a couple of reasons, including mobs that destroy corpses or transient items, and there are a couple of those at least. nodrop transient items wouldn't be protectable from this, and there are steps you can take to avoid item loss for most everything else.

How about a system that simply binds the items to the questor so that they cannot be wielded or worn by anyone else? maybe that could even be made retroactive, whatever character has the item gets bound to it.

why?

are you trying to prevent alts doing quests for their mains?

trying to prevent people from questing avengers and giving them to level 1 twinks?

trying to create a justification for even more uber items?

if you look at the current development of the community its towards having lots of alts an the mud towards being alt friendly. Look back to the days of Mystra who smited people for transferring equipment across evil/good race lines to today where alts can participate in assoc chat and we have storage caches...

functionally alts are almost a necessity as the pbase dwindles since there are so many things you don't want to do without specific classes... Notice on the evil side where nearly every player has a cleric and an enchanter alt.... if there are only 5 evils on you hope to god one has a an alt enc and another an alt cleric....

So... why exactly would you want to start implementing alt unfriendly dynamics? I'm not against having eq tied to specific chars, I'm just not sure that it would add anything to the game. It would get used, but its not gonna make people play a single character more exclusively.
and tonights winner in the Toril EQ lottery is demi belt and skull earring!

What's wrong with trading / transferring / selling a final quest item? Like one that you can't use because you figured out the quest instead of just followed the steps someone told you? This is a silly idea imho. Also, you can't use the disarm skill with transient weapons. Can you drop cursed weapons on disarm fail? I forget...

Quests hard coded to invdividual characters I do like very much... If any coder is interested in hearing a pretty extensive method of doing this I made based on DGscripting system lemme know mmail.

If you make !drop quest items, people will sell an escort through the entire quest. Keep tryin'
It will be fixed in Toril 2.0.
