REBUILDING PBASE

Postby zusuk » Fri Feb 03, 2006 12:33 am

It has begun, the great pbase rebuild of 2k6. Mmail me if you're willing to commit a solid chunk of time to helping an individual newbie (sponsorship we'll call it... or apprenticeship). Don't want to do that? Well then mmail me with a tentative committment to outfit a newbie with low-mid level gear! The list of people has begun. The list of items has begun (thanks Osod). Also looking for individuals to find us TRULY new players (NO CHARACTERS ABOVE 30th, or new to Toril in the last 3 months). If you find a new player, get them in contact me with ASAP. This system is going to depend on co-operation and honesty from everyone! My contact info:

Could setup an adopt-a-newbie program where each newbie is assigned to a mentor. The mentor could help the newbie out with guidance, perhaps donating an item to them every 5 levels, and taking them on light runs (things like underdark, AV, jot, brass etc). If you really want to get the player hooked then you need to give them a taste of what the end game is like before they burnout on the levelling treadmill.

I don't know if my interpretation of this is what you really meant, but it touched a nerve. So, sorry if I'm mis-interpreting this, but

rant on

I would suggest that, if you really want to get a player hooked, you don't convey the attitude that the only fun to be had is at the end game. The attitude that too many players express, the attitude that the only way to have fun is to do the hardest half dozen zones and that's it, would drive me away if I were trying start here. Who wants to wait that long?

And it's a completely biased attitude/perception. There are hundreds of zones that aren't high end, and a lot of us have had a lot of fun in many of them over the last 12 or whatever years. Zones that are interesting and challenging for those of lower level and less playing experience.

And I'm talking about true low level stuff, not stuff "like...jot, brass". You may be bored with Split Shield, but I remember how great it was the first times I went there. I remember noticing and appreciating the atmosphere in Westfalls, one of the first zones where that happened for me. There are plenty of other zones, with plenty of other reasons to like them.

None of us started out at the high end. So why did we stick around? It sure wasn't the idea that "This game is really boring now, but if I stick around for a six months, I'll be able to ...." No, we stuck around because we were having fun. There's plenty of fun at the low end if you're a newbie and haven't done it a dozen times before.

rant off

So, to end on a positive note, my suggestion/idea is this. If you want newbies to stick, show them how to have fun now. Which means remembering where and why you had fun, back when you started, and sharing that with them.

Hey Gurns.. you think we should have another category of helpers? Perhaps "those who will lead mid-level zones" ?

I understand what you're saying... I loved any zoning I did because of the environment of a bunch of us adventuring together and getting to split booty when its done...

It's kind of off topic, but since there is a clear player base problem, maybe disabling race-groupping restrictions could help stimulate things? I wanted to help a grey elf the other day and couldn't do much more than drop some items on her and tell her to please send me tells with problems.

Zusuk.

Perhaps is you do a who (race) when that happens and drop a tell to someone of about the same level and match them up. Or even who (class)?

Just a thought.

Yeah.. but we have no real new people to actually pair up... any ideas how i can bring new people to the MUD? i logged on other muds, but that's not very successful and may be morally wrong :P

<editted>
yeah i actually went on some other MUDs trying to find people and i just ended up pissing people off :P

I think it was Lilithelle who had the idea that someone who's a good artist should combine with someone who's a good write and we should have some TorilMUD themed comics that're really funny and entertaining linked to the MUD...

Anybody interested?

Yeah I have signed up with www.sorcerers.net which is another fansite for AD&D and the the Forgotten Realms

Would be worth a try to attract some players from that end to join the mud.
