Throne Room of the High Priest of Merrshaulk
By sliding down the thick wooden pole one reaches the throne room
of the High Priest of Merrshaulk, who is also the primary leader of
of the city of Hyssk. Here the High Priest perches his bulk on a
dais that serves as his throne, as his snake form has no use for a chair.
The High Priest makes decisions about life in Hyssk, and frequently
consults with the High Priest of Sess'innek in their plans to conquer
Chult and expand the city. For amusement human and other slaves are
brought to the throne room and tortured by skilled assassins.
Especially skilled assassins can actually remove organs without killing
the slave, allowing the High Priest to eat the organs while the slave
is forced to watch. If the slave dies prematurely the assassin may find
himself as the next source of amusement for the High Priest. A pit in the
floor contains thousands of venomous snakes.

A Smooth Dais on Top of the Ziggurat
In the very center of this top level of the pyramid stands a raised
platform made of a single massive slab of granite. On top of the smooth
dais is a jet black altar of polished onyx, shaped like a huge cobra
with its hood spread and with great wings sprouting from its body.
Glittering rubies form the eyes of stone serpent, giving it an aura of
powerful malevolence. The top of the altar towers sixteen feet above
the ground, creating a small shady spot on the stone below. Grooves cut
into the altar are apparently for channeling the blood of victims
sacrificed to Merrshaulk, God of Poison, Lord of Sleep. A thick wooden
pole runs downward through a circular hole in the pyramid.
