Khaiden clears his throat.

'That ball... I'm not sure what happened. When I looked at it, all I saw were stars, and my mind seemed to open up, taking in everything around me.'

The half-elf wrings his hands, wiping away their clamminess on his outfit.

'I look at each of you now, and I can hear voices...like I'm hearing your thoughts. It's all muddled though, and my mind is kinda cloudy.'

Khaiden shrugs, trying to play it off as something not quite so serious and life-altering.

Clearing his throat uncomfortably Birile says, "Um, Khaiden... you look a little pale. Why don't you sit and relax for a bit? I'm sure it would do you some good... in fact, try not to think too much about the crystal--we'll take care of it." Birile offers a weak version of a reassuring smile.

There is no answer to Koray's line of questioning. A closer look reveals that while Seret is in no danger of dying now, it may be some time before he regains consciousness.

Meanwhile, the fire burns steadily under Tasan's care.

The white-haired man appears to be thinking something over. "I don't actually know who you are," he finally admits. "I just had your descriptions and a job to take something you were carrying. I don't suppose you're the Zhentarim?"

Birile clears his throat and intercedes between the cleric and Seret, "Gentlemen! I'm sure everything will be cleared up soon enough! Surely, there must be some misunderstanding that has caused this unfortunate encounter..." Birile positions himself between Koray and the white-haired man and says, "Sir... we surely know nothing of the Zhentarim you seek... pray tell, who informed you we were aligned with them?"

Keeping his cool, Birile replies, "Ah, I see! Well, luckily we're able to clear the air about that! We, sir, are not affiliated with the Zhentarim." Changing the subject slightly, Birile continues innocently, "Now, this bit you mentioned about being hired to take something from us? Who is your benefactor? And what could they possibly want with anything the lot of us might have? Surely, we've done nothing to anyone to warrant such a thing!"

"Do you deny you have a package?" Seret responds. "My . . . benefactor left instructions to recover it. That you were Zhentarim was my own guess. Rumor is they have the deadliest spies."

Birile chuckles, "Friend, I'm not sure what you mean by this 'package', but I can tell you one thing for certain--you are in no position to be asking questions." Indicating Thalidyrr, Birile continues, "It seems to me that thanks to my Elven friend here, your lot is to answer quite a bit more than ask! Seret pauses a moment before answering. "Bad enough that you caught me. I won't tell you any more unless you somehow convince me you aren't spies. If you don't care to tell me anything, then do your worst. I am prepared."

Birile thinks for a moment, considering the white-haired man.

"A noble gesture on your part to be sure. I do hope you forgive the questions, but you must surely understand that we were merely walking along the path and you and your band tried to waylay us! There's rather little reason for us to trust you now!" Birile pauses, considering, and then turns to his allies.

From not far off, Tasan watches the movements of the other men around the bound captive and seeing that the halfling appears to be exasperated, he gives a solemn nod. He pulls the longsword from the bottom of the fire where it has sat for some time. The blade is a cool orange which gives off small wisps of smoke as it moves through the air. Tasan moves closer to the conversation and picks up enough to know the man isn't talking. He catches the last words of the white-haired man and approaches his backside. He touches the flat side of the blade against the back of the man's elbow very briefly and then speaks low.

"You said you were prepared for anything, but something tells me you've never dealt with someone trained by followers of Loviatar. Between the priest and I, you could be in pain for a very long time. Obviously we're not dressed as Zhentarim spies would be. Speak plain and to the point lest you find out what pain really is."

Thalidyrr moves into the assembled group, and moves the glowing hot sword away from the captured Seret, moving Tasan away slightly.

"I grow very weary of this. We never did say we were Zhentarim. Our fellow warrior here stated he was trained by followers of Loviatar, which is a far stretch from what you claim us to be."

He rounds on Seret, and pulls him to his feet, "We are travellers on a task of which we signed up for in Waterdeep. We are delievering a message and that is it. Now, we're done speaking. We will escort you to the authorities in Minthka, and they will either verify or disprove your statement that you work for the Lords I assume. We have work yet to do, and this is quite the waste."

Thalidyrr regards the man for a moment more, then back to the assembled group. "Shall we go?"

With relief Birile says, "That's probably for the best." He looks around the area, taking in the previous battle and spots the armor he had placed over the crystal ball. "Say, Thalidyrr... would you mind taking care of that crystal? Don't touch it directly, and keep it tightly wrapped in something. And don't look directly into it like our magely friend did!"

Spotting the swords and other gathered items, Birile picks up the shortsword which looked more like a longsword to him, "Mayhap some of these items will fetch something at market." He also takes two of the potions at random and stores them and the sword away in his satchel.

Khaiden rises to his feet, wiping a small bit of ash off his sleeve, which only results in the soot smearing into the fabric.

"Dammit," he mutters aloud, licking his fingertips and trying to get the black smudge out.

"I'd like to see that crystal again when we stop for the night," he says to no one directly, but looking directly at the lump in Tasan's hands.

Looking at Seret calmly, he continues. "Maybe our new friend here could shed some light as to its purpose and function."

Khaiden grabs two of the potions and shoves them in his belt quietly, saying nothing more.

Thalidyrr walks over to where the orb lies and reaches down halting a second before he grasps it, and carefully places it into his pack in one of the more padded areas. Also, he reaches for a couple of potions and stuffs them into the pack as well.

"We shall see about the orb, I am not sure I trust you with it just yet. Atleast, after your initial reaction."

He glances around one last time at the fire, and the spilt blood, "We should be on our way. Minthka shouldn't be to far away."

Tasan moves to the old man's backside and grabs his shoulders to stand him up. He steadies the white haired man as the trauma of the day washes over his bound form. After a few moments he shoves the man lightly in the direction of his companions and quietly grunts, "March". He falls into step behind the shambling steps of the injured elder, with the now cool longsword laid gently against his right shoulder. As he passes closer to the dying fire, he snatches his pack up and shoulders it in stride.

As he scrutinizes Seret further, Tasan realizes that the man looks decidedly younger than expected, his face smooth and unwrinkled despite the age his hair would suggest. Mulling this over, he pushes the prisoner into line for the party to march.

The walk further into the valley is mostly silent, punctuated only by the underfoot crunch of late fall leaves and the occasional howl in the distance. Winter is coming with a vengeance, and green seems to have fully fled the landscape, leaving behind not only magnificent red and yellow leaves, but also ugly, dead-looking brown things.

As you puzzle over recent events, it suddenly occurs to you that the last howl seemed closer than the others.

Tasan marches along stoically behind the captive man, watching the area about the party as they travel down the trail. He moves the longsword which was at his shoulder down and turns his grip upon the hilt. The tip of the blade writhes along the ground as it drags behind him. As the last howl reverberates around them, he calls out the the party.

"Close ranks. If we're attacked we'll have to protect this one. Form a circle about him as we move."

Thalidyrr keeps moving, watching out for any signs of movement in the brush around him as he walks. "So, Dwylt, any ideas about who this Seret person truly is? You've been very quiet since the incident. Is there any light you would like to shed on the situation that perhaps you haven't felt inclined to yet? We should be getting close to the village now."

Thalidyrr tilts his head slightly to peer back at the dwarf, and continues "It may be better to do so now, prior to arriving."

Tasan peers at Dwylt and in an overtly saccharine voice asks, "So in your time with this one, you learned nothing of him? You heard nothing in passing from the rest of your crew?" He turns his attention back to the captive in front of him and addresses his backside with the same light candor. "How about you Seret? I cannot believe the Lords would be so careful with their information of your target as to leave you with the impression we were the intended. Explain your dealings with the Lords to us. It might give us insight on what to do with you once we reach Minthka."

I couldn't tell if the wolf was dead already, or was just dying so I assumed he was just dying.

I also realized that a coup de grace always hits, but here's my horrid attack roll that I made anyway:

Ranged Attack [3dex/1size/=4firing into melee] (1d20+3+1-4=6)

And damage:

Ranged Damage (1d4=4)

Coup de grace is an automatic crit, total damage=8

The arrow embeds itself in the wolf's eye. Its body jerks with the impact, and then lies still.

Snarling loudly, three more wolves burst from the undergrowth to attack Koray, Dwylt, and Birile.

The dwarves are bitten, while the halfling manages to avoid a pair of snapping jaws. Dwylt staggers with the shock of the wound, but remains standing.

OOC Koray takes 7 damage, Dwylt 3 damage.

Koray needs to make an opposing strength or dex check at a +4 bonus (dwarven stability) or be tripped. Dwylt made his easily. Go team dwarf?
