Running Mac OSX? Use tinyfugue like this!

Postby hagah » Wed Mar 08, 2006 1:53 pm

BTW the reason for running X windows just to run an Xterm is that there is currently not a single terminal application for osx that has half the functionality of xterm as far as understanding keypresses & determining correct ansi colors.. I have tried everything and the only thing that comes close is GLterm but it too has many problems and shortcomings!! You don't have to keep X open alll the time and it really doesn't take up THAT much memory.. I find the combination of correct colors + speed to be very nice for my mudding experience..

Download X windows for OSX, it comes with Xcode, or you can install it off your original install CD using "Custom Install" ..

http://developer.apple.com/tools/xcode/index.html

Once that is installed, create a file in your home directory called ~/.Xdefaults and put this in it :

XTerm*boldMode: false
XTerm*background: black
XTerm*foreground: #B2B2B2
XTerm*cursorColor: white
XTerm*dynamicColors: true
XTerm*jumpScroll: false
XTerm*geometry: 90x35
XTerm*scrollLines: 6000

XTerm*color0: #000000
XTerm*color1: #B21818
XTerm*color2: #149214
XTerm*color3: #B26818
XTerm*color4: #1818B2
XTerm*color5: #B218B2
XTerm*color6: #18B2B2
XTerm*color7: #B2B2B2
XTerm*color8: #464646
XTerm*color9: #FF5454
XTerm*color10: #54FF54
XTerm*color11: #FFFF54
XTerm*color12: #5454FF
XTerm*color13: #FF54FF
XTerm*color14: #54FFFF
XTerm*color15: #FFFFFF

Next.. Download tinyfugue for OSX, you can do this several ways.. I find the best method to compile the most recent version.. you can download it here :

http://ftp.tcp.com/pub/mud/Clients/tiny ... 0b7.tar.gz

tar -zxvf tf-50b7.tar.gz
cd tf-50b7
./configure
make
sudo make install

Or if you don't like compiling software, you can download a prepacked version here (although this version didn't work well for me at all, lots of little problems)

http://www.druware.com/products/tinyfugue.html

Final Step for tinyfugue newbies, especially on torilmud is to grab/modify nokies tinyfugue scripts at :

http://billimek.com/sojourn/

.....

Thats it, load up X windows, open an Xterm, type tf and jump in.. This is a really powerful client, the most powerful you can get on a Mac right now. It can also be extremely difficult to understand and figure out :) If you have some questions about it I have been using it for the past four or five years or so and have written a lot of scripts myself. Let me know and I can post snippets and help with whatever I can.

You can find me in game as mung/hagah/huluk or post on the boards here..

The Fink project has ported tf. It's an easier install, IMHO.

Okay, first install the base Fink package. You'll want to go to this page and download the latest version you can get.

Then go download the Fink Commander frontend from here. Once you've done that, open Fink Commander and use it to install tf.
