Re: New Global Warming Thread
Frankly, at this point Bush's attempts to act concerned about global warming come of as a little... fake. He's had 8 years of leading the country to deal with the issue, so why does he say nothing about fuel standards or limiting carbon emissions until just before he leaves office and ca't do anything anymore?

Because Dick Cheney has started investing in alternative fuels, so now he stands to make money off that instead.

Learning? The Bush administration has laid out numerous goals concerning a wide variety of topics - including global climate change since practically the beginning of his presidency.
You not knowing does not equal him learning.

What do alternative fuels have to do with capping or lowering or even controlling greenhouse emissions? Most everything BURNED gives off carbon dioxide. And don't get me started on electric vehicles. You just pre-burn your fossil fuels at the coal-fired power plant.

Before the rest of my posts get covered in intellectual slop, I would just like to say that this reversal is a minor triumph for science. I don't lend this guy's climate model any more credit than the last one he did, but the idea that a scientist can compile the best data he can, find that it doesn't support his decades old theory, and admit it to the public is score one for value-neutral research.

Let's see. Ok, there's the out of context quote with the elipsis in the middle that could hide "to a certain extent." Of course, the rest of the article is him bitching that people are raising money due to Global warning, by a guy who has made a career out of creating junk science propaganda. Right. No hypocricy there!
But I digress, and will simply point out that Exxon-Mobil is paying him to say these things:

I think his complaint is that the people that are promoting the unproven idea of human-caused, greenhouse gas aggrevated global warming (and preventable by human means) are the ones poised to make the most profit.
It's a standard con. Honestly, hardly anything worth complaining about, but then again, so is basic forum moderation...

didn't read the full post, so not sure if anyone posted about this or not. I was watching I think Foxnews the other day and they reported on reserch findings of how in the next 50 years or so the world was going to cool down, not heat up unlike the global warmers theory. I found it quite interesting as I've never bought into the whole we're killing mother earth propaganda.
Also, something else I remember reading about, at the moment we're about 500 or so years past our due date for the average ice age, once every 25,000 years or so were around 25,500 or something. Which leads me to believe that heat isn't going to take us out, cold is.

Err... care to explain how an ice age being delayed debunks theories of the planet being heated up by human activity?

how is the earth getting colder over the next 50 years not applicable to the idea of global warming? are you dense, if the earth is getting colder that means it's not heating up, and it was all caused by natural causes.
this is my own opinion, and I believe it (well of course I do since it's mine heh) The industrial revolution has been going on for around 150 years tops, probably not even that long. The idea that we humans using carbon based materials can cause massive damage to a thing that has been living for what 50 million years, at the least? that just sounds bogus to me.

You obviously have no idea about the synthetic amounts of pollution that have been dumped into the atmosphere during that 150 year period, do you? Nor have you formulated the non-existance of such pollution in the 50 million years prior to that period, have you?

Re: New Global Warming Thread
Wow, that "article" felt about the same as reading one of Teffie's forum posts. Calling other papers "pathetic," using anecdotal evidence, and not providing any actual facts for his claim.
He implies that sunspots, volcanic activity or clouds "doing what they do" are causing the warming. He provides no evidence that they do, and in fact solar activity has been disproven as a cause of warming! Hell, he doesn't even let us know what clouds "do." (Anyone who's played sim-earth knows they reflect sunlight, I mean really... )
MEanwhile the website itself pretty much reveals a clear bias. If you go to the front page they have an article titled "The Unholly Alliance that manufactured Global Warming." (sic) Unholy alliance? Please. Oh, and they aren't even smart enough to properly capitalize the title... so yeah. Reaks, just reaks of credibility.
It's funny that the author is quoted as saying "Too much of what passes for news today lacks depth, insight or value" yet his article is so lacking in any actual information that it cannot have any value except to the most credulous of people. I'd also note that the author wrote many pro-pesticide articles while receiving money from pesticide companies. How can we know the same thing is not happening here?

Hey, we may need to change the title of this thread to what Liberals are using now. Global Warming is out and Global Climate Change is in. Good story about how the Sun has affected the climate in the past. It's odd that its hotter when the sun is high in the sky and cooler when the Sun isn't up. Guess the Sun does affect the climate...

next you'll be saying that we should get rid of dihydrogen monoxide because:
- is called "hydroxyl acid", the substance is the major component of acid rain.
- contributes to the "greenhouse effect".
- may cause severe burns.
- contributes to the erosion of our natural landscape.
- accelerates corrosion and rusting of many metals.
- may cause electrical failures and decreased effectiveness of automobile brakes.
- has been found in excised tumors of terminal cancer patients.

Re: New Global Warming Thread
Global Warming is a term that was mostly pushed by the media many decades ago. First usage of 'global warming' was 1969. It is also an indication of the evolution of the science around global climate dynamics...kind of the same way 'advances' in physics or computer engineering are referred to as 'advances' not 'media spin by ideological camps trying to disguise flaws in their psuedo-science.'

This explanation from the uber-liberal Bush-era EPA:
The term climate change is often used interchangeably with the term global warming, but according to the National Academy of Sciences, "the phrase 'climate change' is growing in preferred use to 'global warming' because it helps convey that there are [other] changes in addition to rising temperatures."
Climate change refers to any significant change in measures of climate (such as temperature, precipitation, or wind) lasting for an extended period (decades or longer). Climate change may result from:
* natural factors, such as changes in the sun's intensity or slow changes in the Earth's orbit around the sun;
* natural processes within the climate system (e.g. changes in ocean circulation);
* human activities that change the atmosphere's composition (e.g. through burning fossil fuels) and the land surface (e.g. deforestation, reforestation, urbanization, desertification, etc.)
Global warming is an average increase in the temperature of the atmosphere near the Earth's surface and in the troposphere, which can contribute to changes in global climate patterns. Global warming can occur from a variety of causes, both natural and human induced. In common usage, "global warming" often refers to the warming that can occur as a result of increased emissions of greenhouse gases from human activities.

How well do you think it would work if we actually _created_ thousands of gallons more h2o on a daily basis?

Re: New Global Warming Thread
With cap and trade legislation about to be passed in the Congress, I thought that this was a timely article. Interesting that global warming skepticism is increasing in Europe and elsewhere, and decreasing in the US.
Disclaimer: I don't understand the science behind global warming and have no real opinion on the subject other than the fact that I am generally skeptical of major leftist causes.

Re: New Global Warming Thread
Anything that cleans up or produces less waste is never a bad thing. While I'm not a "true believer" in global-warming, I'm not that much of a skeptic either. The problem isn't that important for me to research as even if it isn't true, not raping the earth is always a good thing. Not breathing in more waste from the air is a good thing. Finding alternative fuels to loosen the stranglehold from foreign oil producing countries is a good thing. So, even if global-warming turns out to be a myth, the ends justified the means.

Re: New Global Warming Thread
Unfortunately thats a very simplistic way of looking at things Kifle. In the abstract it might not be a good thing to 'rape the earth'. But when you get into it, green policies have enormous economic costs. If they are really preventing some harm then they may be justified. If there is no real harm, then its having the very concrete effect of lowering a lot of people's standard of living for no good reason.
