Aquarids/Bolides Day:

"η - Aquarids – 21 Apr – 12 May: Maximum peak of meteors at around midnight, 5/6 May. Can produce some very bright meteors and occasional bolides. This is the 1st annual meteor shower caused by debris from Halley’s Comet."

From:

http://www.bluemountainscabins.com.au/d ... %20sky.doc

Haven't searched the net for more info on it, there would be some.

---

Had a bit of a look (in the Newcastle, NSW area) just now, saw a few.

Most are really subtle & hard to see, and I couldn't even tell a consistent direction or altitude.

I did see one very marked one though, clearly from the northwest to the southeast, high in the sky slightly east from vertical.
Man it went for ages, through several degrees at least - almost seemed to be glowing and flaring as it broke up too.. wicked.

My wife reckons she saw quite a few very subtle, in the northern & western sky - hard to tell I thought.

Love these!

Beijing Olympics Wrap-Up day #2:

Lol That's Pretty Funny (Yanks NBC's medal tally page) - But the REAL medal tally takes into account such results Per Capita, as is Shown Here (Beijing Medal Tally - Total Medals Per Capita page) which of course takes into account the population base from which to develop our elite athletes.

And here is a funny Response by the Poms to beating Australia in the "Total Gold Medals" Beijing Medal Tally as well - look at it per capita buddies!

Hey, we should at least get a handicap on that considering 90% of our food is junk food. Hard to get a good pool of potential athletes when you've got a really high child obesity rate! ;)

I guess counting medals like that would make a lot of sense -- if the number of events wasn't finite... ... ... Swish that around in your aussie brain inbetween chants and barrels of fosters. WTF Mate -- australian for math.

Re: Beijing Opening Ceremony:

I had to drive during the evening through most of it, so listened to abc am radio call of it.

But I recorded it and only last night watched (the bulk of) it..

One word: OUTSTANDING.

The radio call, whilst ok, could hardly do justice to the spectacle that was that event. So glad I recorded it and watched the TV broadcast. Very, very impressive!

Except for Channel 7's bloody advertising through much of it of course.

There has been much public discussion for and against funding for elite athletes, Olympic campaigns, Olympic ceremonies & fireworks in them etc.

The Olympic Games is THE BEST truly global event in the world.
The core values it represents such as friendship, peace & sportsmanship alone warrant the resources used to make it the huge production it is.

Arguments such as "oh, most of the olympic games budget should be spent on healthcare & education instead" are such ridiculous modern-day-economist/political views - people who truly believe that should take a step back, see the big picture, and if they simply must ride the economist horse then they should looks at Defence budgets and other more appropriate sources from which to reallocate funds.

That opening ceremony was fantastic.
An excellent application of so many facets in a wonderful way - including art, dance, culture, history, technology, pyrotechnics, choreography, acrobatics & multimedia experience.
I have never seen anything quite like it.

An absolute pinnacle of human achievement - we should all count ourselves glad & lucky to be living in this era where we can make such events into what they are.

Bring on the next, and the next, and the next Olympic games and let's see more!

No Way!
They were all, each of them, real and perfect!
The little girl sung every word herself.
The huge scroll was real paper.
Those were real spacemen come down from space itself with really good timing.
Those were the actual drums from thousands of years ago, preserved perfectly.
Those were the actual oars from the ships the old admiral commanded.

..Indigenous Sporting War Cries day..

Great to see one of the few "World Cups" of teams competing in a REAL contact sport.

Oh, and check out this footage of some amazing interpretations of the respective teams' traditional War cries..

The Aboriginal War Cry vs the Maori Haka just prior to the start of the game of Australian Indigenous XIII vs New Zealand Maori XIII in an entertaining curtain-raiser match of the 2008 Rugby League World Cup at the Sydney Football Stadium last Sunday 26 October:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nk2Cwl_flZc

Result:

Australian Indigenous Team 34 (Rhys Wesser 2, Rod Jensen 2, Jason Carney, Yileen Gordon tries; Jamie Soward 5 conversions).

beat

New Zealand Maori 26 (Sam McKendry, Shaun Kenny-Dowall, Chase Stanley, Jordan Rapana, Arana Taumata tries; Bronx Goodwin 2 conversions; Chase Stanley conversion).

Good stuff.

Review Day for PE Gig last Night

Posted: Sun Jan 04, 2009 12:48 am

Went & saw Public Enemy @ Newcastle Panthers Club, Sat 03Jan09, was fantastic!

Doors opened around 8pm, show started 8:30pm.

Watched a bit of each of the supporting acts – “Beats Working” Aussie Hip-Hoppers were pretty good actually, and another crew with both a female & male rapper (+ male DJ) were also quite good (finishing up with quite a cool mix based on that song with the line: “I still call Australia home”).
Whilst the other lead-up act “The Tongue” were pretty ordinary for mine.

PE didn’t actually hit the stage until 11:15pm – much later than I thought, but the vibe of the crowd and lead-up acts were pretty good still, so overall it “felt” fine to have them kick it off relatively late.

AND, they didn’t finish until around 1:45am – yes, a full 2.5 hours!
Most of the gigs I have been to at this venue have finished around the time PE started.

Last time I saw PE was around 20 years ago at the Hordern Pavilion in Sydney, and whilst I cannot recall many details from that gig I can say that last night their show was equally impressive and almost as enegetic!
They were very impressive, really put in a lot during much of their time on stage, and really lived up to their reputation live.

There were quite a few casual chats to the crowd in between songs, some politically-motivated, some music-oriented, some just plain out congratulating the city of Newcastle and the crowd there that night.

There was quite a lot of interaction with the entire front rows of the crowd actually, lots of hand slapping, offering their mics for some of the crowd to sing along occasionally, and it was really cool of Chuck D. to, in several instances, carefully grab the camera from some person near the front then turn partway round, hold the camera facing him with the crowd and camera owner behind him, and take a shot or 2 before carefully returning it – never seen that before!

They performed the entire album of tracks in order from their 2nd ever album: “It takes a nation of millions to hold us back” (released in June 1988) which was fantastic - “Bring the noise” and “She watch channel zero” were highlights.
They also threw in a few other great popular tracks including “Welcome to the terrordome”, “911 is a joke”, “By the time I get to Arizona”, “Fight the power”, all of which were introduced in interesting and varied ways, were met with the most energy and jumping right through the crowd, and were extended live mixes which was very cool.

DJ Lord, their DJ for the last 10 years or so was great – certainly proving he deserves to be on the tables for PE, and Flavor Flav finished up the night chatting to the crowd for quite a while, including asking us all the question: (along the lines of) “Do ya think you got your money’s worth?”..
Hell yes.

Very glad I went!

..The day after a fantastic game of Tennis (last night, Australian Open Grand Slam Semi Final) with Nadal vs Verdasco, probably best game I've seen in years.

Verdascoe REALLY gave it to him, and almost bested him too!
Some of those heavy rallies, and then amazing cross-court shots, with such intensity!

About 2/3 of the way through it, one of the commentators said that this match was shaping into one of the greatest ever played - and he was spot on. An EPIC match.

5hrs & 14mins - the longest match ever played in the history of that event, glad I hung in there and watched it.

Now 2 great played in the final tomorrow, I like both of them and will be going for Federer and think he'll beat Rafa in 4 sets.
