I never watched the original Macross, but I did watch Robotech. The newest Macross, Macross Frontier, feels almost like a tribute to the first series and has a ton of references to previous Macross series. It's a good anime and it's only getting better.

Macross: Do You Remember Love is the definitive Macross movie imo. the animation will blow your mind. the story is different from the american version but not too much different from the actual original series. the soundtrack is pretty slick

the original japanese macross can be had for cheap, and is well worth a watch. you not only see all the lovely stuff that was cut from the american version but the plot actually makes more sense (sometimes)

Aye, seen them all. Was one of the first anime series I got into way way back in time. Used to have to wait weeks and months for anime releases from sansubs and Macross was always one of the best ones to get (got it from some fansub group in Canada oddly enough).
