Aiding and Abetting

Postby teflor the ranger » Thu Mar 25, 2010 1:32 am

Question for the audience here: Should the United States of America make it illegal for American citizens, corporations, and American controlled entities from assisting foreign nations in violating human rights?

I think the United States of America should make it impossible to graduate high school without courses in logic, rationality, and critical thinking.

Doesn't quite seem to answer the question, but ok.

If any attempt at this was made you would have to realize that alot of unintentional ramifications would happen. A few years back the US government made some noise about banning all products made with child labour, well in bangledash the clothing manufacturers paniced and fired some 500,000 children from thier factories, those pennies a day went a long way to feeding and clothing them. So what happened to those 500,000 children? well a lot of them ended up in more dangerous jobs, and in other things like child prostitiution, on top of that some of those children where the only income earners in thier familes and they ended up starving, all this cause the american government made some noise about banning products made with child labour.

Its nice that people want to do good and voice thier displeasure about countries and corporations violating human rights, but some nations are practically built on what we view as violations of human rights, to start to change the rules of the game would cause alot of unintentionally changes to a lot of things that we couldnt possibly imagine.

I disagree with your general point. Ofcourse different parts of the world have different approaches to human rights. But to continue to buy items made with the help of child labour because you don't want them to become prostetures is in my world a fairly off argument.

Where would your argument stop? Would you allow child soldiers because thats better than child prostetutes?

I think people should start to pay the right prices for their products.

What im saying is instead of a dramatic change of policy toward stuff like this we need to encourage countries to attepmt to ween thier populations off of the practices of child labor etc. Mexico had a huge problem with child labor but through social programs that actually pay children to stay in school more and more children are staying in school cause thier families can afford for them to be their. Setting dead lines for moves like this would set a good amount of pressure on those nations that are at this point infringing on human rights, and when those dead lines hit than allow for bans or perhap taxes on those products making the use of child labor or other human rights violations that much more unattractive.

However i think a better alternative would be for people to start putting pressure on corporations that use the countries that abuse human rights violations, attempting to make the living conditions of thier workers better. It will cost the consumer more by doing this, however id be willing to spend an extra dollar on certain products if it meant that the person making them actually got enough to eat, and that thier lives were a little better off cause of it.
