Hang Percussion Instrument

Someone randomly sent me a video of some hippie banging away on one of these things and I thought that it was pretty unique both for what it was, and for the sounds it makes.

The Swiss inventors created it using the Helmholtz resonance phenomena (think blowing across the mouth of an empty bottle). Their sound is similar to a steel drum, except they are played with your hands and fingers rather than mallets. 7 years since they created it and the two original creates are still the only ones in the world who make them, and in a severely limited supply. They actually vette buyers before selling one of their instruments for talent and then have them sign papers preventing them from reselling their Hangs. They come off the shelf for around 2000$ each and there's a waiting list to get them.

This Dante Bucci guy is pretty good, give it a listen.

These are simlar to a steel-slit drum, but I think that forcing all the air out through a single hole gives it a much, much more polished sound.

Wow - that's pretty sweet. Would love to get my hands on one of those.

That's pretty awesome. It ranks up there with the theremin and hurdy-gurdy in terms of weird musical instruments that nobody knows about.
