To fix the spammers...

Turn off the registration.
Make someone actually PLAY and verify IP, etc. w/ingame admin -prior- to receiving a BBS account.

If the BBS is limited to people who actually play the mud then it'll REALLY be dead.

The true answer to fixing the spam situation is for everyone to post their general topics in the politics forum and just ignore General Discussion. Full circle. :)

On the phpBB forums I manage, I've found it particularly helpful to use user registration by admin approval. It's more work to review each registration, but it certainly cuts down on spam.
