This is obviously ingenuous and he was only caught because his girlfriend was a decent human being.

The scary part of this is the fact that they arrested a black man who'se face actually resembled the mask this guy wore... Witnesses picked him out as the perp. This could've gone very badly for this innoncent man, but what can you do to prevent it?
