I'm just about speechless. It's too bad it's probably not going to be incredibly reproducible, but this is pretty awesome.

Re: Man with HIV Cured
from another set of comments on this topic:
"From my friend, an HIV researcher:
Me: So is this genuine progress or breathless "science" journalism?
Him: A little of both to be honest. They basically replaced the man's entire bone stem cell population with a donor's to "cure" him. Which only works for one type of the virus. Which only works if you have an exact match for a bone marrow donor. Which only works if the exact match happens to have the super rare CCR5-32 mutation that makes them immune to that one type of virus. And you get to take immunosuppressants for the rest of your life because you have another dude's bone marrow in you. That being said, they cured HIV."

I like to think that it's genetic engineering at its best.

It was an interesting accident. Not very reproducible - but hopefully it provides a little bit of insight to researchers.
Having said all that, the situation has been handled, so this thread is pretty much at an end. -Kossuth

To make matters worse, it's highly risky. I mean, they had to destroy his immune system first. I could see like, 3-5 of these procedures being done per year though.

Destroying the immune system isn't all that uncommon. My girlfriend has early onset rheumatoid arthritis, and she gets a weekly shot that blows up her immune system so it doesn't attack her own joints. Requires some minor lifestyle changes, but it's not as invasive as you might think.
Also: Hey, they cured HIV. It's a good start.

Re: Man with HIV Cured
I read this a few days ago...
it sounds like an amazing accident that just might lead to a real, reproducible cure.
and echo what Ragorn said... pretty much anytime you get a transplant of any kind you're stuck on immuno supressants the rest of your life.
Sorry to hear that about your GF ragorn, rheumatoid arthritis is a horrible horrible horrible disease. My aunt got it in her late 30s, she was a cripple by 40 and looked like she was in her 60s. Now that shes mid 50s, she looks like death warmed over. She sees the doctor at least 1x a week for the past several years... and she has had very good medical care, my cousin takes care of her and has great health insurance.

The shot sounds like an immunosuppressor, which is far less invasive than chemotherapy to destroy the immune system. My sympathy to your gf, arthritis is tough. If she hasn't already she should look into social security benefits.
