More educators caught cheating

Postby kiryan » Tue Jul 05, 2011 4:22 pm

Ridiculous.

First of all, its a sad state of affairs when you announce the fact that there will be "serious" consequences for persons involved in cheating in the public schools. Serious is a wholly inappropriate word, it should be "will be fired"... whether they were ordered to by their superiors (teachers or principals/adminstrative staff) or because they were worried about losing their jobs. They must all be fired and criminally charged. Public employees who commit fraud can not be tolerated and can not be allowed to simply go to work at another school... especially when they are working with our children.

Second of all, the noble teacher myth is finally unravelling. The "poor teacher" campaign has defined at least the past 2 decades. You all know the story, poor teachers, they don't make anything they have to work long hours etc etc etc, we need to give them more money... Except it was all bullshit as every teacher you know will retire better than 90% of the people in the private sector. And then those poor teachers are now issuing death threats against politicians, protesting at special olympic ceremonies and in general acting like spoiled brats who were entitled to another piece of cake. Nope public employees, educators are not some sort of noble self sacrificing saint, they're regular joes who lie and cheat and think they're better than everyone else just like the scum bags on wallstreet.

Come on libs, wheres your defense of these poor teachers who only cheated because of NCLB!

Of these poor black kids who were "denied the right to accurate testing"?

Surely you have something to say.

I don't think liberals in general deny that there is a worst 1% core of teachers that should be expelled - they just don't believe that the administration of schools has the capability to accurately identify and purge them with cause.

is it only1% of teachers in this situation, it seems like a lot more, but I can't seem to figure out how many total teachers/administrators were at the 44 schools. Also, it was a lot of principals.

Second of all, the unions aren't worried about whether the administration can get rid of the 1%. They are concerned with the weakening of their power to prevent terminations. The hallmark of union power and support is the grievance system and if schools can fire people for performance it circumvents the grievance process in principle if not in the technical.

also, it should be noted that apparently atlanta teachers are not unionized. and there is some evidence that teachers, who remained members of the american teacher federation, may have first reported the cheating. +1 for unions.

Of the 56 schools that were examined, cheating was discovered in 44 of them — that’s more than 78 percent — and 178 teachers and principals were found to have cheated on standardized tests, according to a statement released by Gov. Nathan Deal and first reported by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Eighty-two confessed, while half a dozen others pled the Fifth Amendment, which is an implied admission of wrongdoing under civil law.

Hey, if their incompetence level is only at 25%, it'd just be another industry.

cheaters and crappy teachers should be fired. unions should be allowed to defend themselves.

maybe the solution is, for now, doing a 'reset'.... busting all the unions hard and fast, wiping the slate clean (mass firings and all that), and then re-institute unions afterward with new ppl in charge?

probably can't be done fairly tho

the reset would be interesting... if you mean throwing out all existing contracts and having a do over for new negotiation.

A reset in disbanding all unions... then letting them just re-form with the same leadership (why would the leadership change?) would be useless as far as I'm thinking. Even letting them re-form after say banning all current leaders... would still wouldn't work since they'd be sitting around proxying through their protege's... a disabanding followed by say a 5-10 year "cooling off" period could work... all those union bosses would have to find real jobs, the country and employees could see how not having a union works. that might be reasonable.
