nope drain is just the message you get when a non-corporeal hits you. there are 2 things that could be the cause.

1. Is your weapon magic? You cant hit specters with nonmagic weapons.

2. Sometimes things pop with >max hitpoints and they bleed off slowly.

Yes weapon is magic, I killed the thing a little while after that strangeness. If you have nonmagic weapons it just doesn't hit the spectres, it'll say you miss every time. If you're thinking it might have been changed for beta or something then yeah I was thinking along the same lines but no, I damaged it with the next attack.

It probably has the +max_hps or something.

undead start with more hp than they actually have I think

Not an undead thing, it's a general wraith mob thing. They all start out with a bit above their max hp.
