Are you referring to the toggle vic?
It will keep you engaged until dead.

Gin, he is referring to the fact that the mob is lying motionless on the ground, yet he has to take several swings at it to even land a hit, much less a powerful enough one to kill it. If the mob is incap and just sitting there, you should be able to kill it without taking a bunch of swings.

Not toggle vic, the fact that I kept missing. Hit him once, which means I'm able to hit him. Then kept missing on a mob lying here bleeding to death on the ground. Hrm, mebe theres just something really hard about punching something lying on the ground not moving at all. That must be it. New zone tactic, all tanks lie on the ground while tanking. =P

Um... wow... did everyone (ok, excluding Zrax) just MISS the fact that this was a shade?

Wraithforms require magical weapons to hit. You will always get a miss message if you swing a non-magical weapon at them, whether incapacitated or not.

Heh, this is the way it has always been. Wraithforms are able to be hit, or attacked w/ a magical weapon. Otherwise they are invounrable to melee.

As for hit working, perhaps it's because a wraithform can "hit" you meaning it has some sort of substance. Shrug.

The Shade is not a wraith form because he did hit it..

The code of no miss might have been overwritten maybe? :P

Actually, I was thinking that you might be able to "hit" them with your hands, as they are not a weapon. Could be wrong though.

(Just tried it, and I can indeed hit a spectre with my bare hands, but not with a non-magic weapon).

Not that that comes up as a useful tactic or anything.

Might be nice if there was a different message when using a non-magic weapon on a wraithform than there is for standard missing. Like "Your attack passes harmlessly through the shade!"

actually i think in D&D hand damage could hit creatures that can only be struck by magic if the attacker is of a certain level, I seem to rememeber that in reference to monsters but i am not sure if it was that way for pc's. It could just be a bug that hands can hit wraithform but they may have intended it that way as well based on how D&D did it.

ok after more testing, I think the shade is wraith. Thing is, I can hit it with my fists, probably on a crit, wheras I cant hit it at all with a weapon (sat around for a few minutes missing it). So now the problem would be how am I able to hit the wraith mob at all with fists (I know its cuz I'm a mage).
Btw its still possible to miss an incapped mob, so thats a diff problem altogether.

Well, mobs of a certain number of hit dice can hit as +1 weapons, etc, etc.

Also, monks gained that ability in D&D. (I know, I know, no monks).

I believe the code change that went in to "fix" the problem w/ incap mobs only applied to the mobs chances to save via a skill, i.e. dodge etc. I'm not sure it was ever intended to be a never miss situation.

I've missed 4 consecutive backstab attempts on a mortally wounded mob to have it bleed to death on me. Yes, folks, that's 4. Up from my previous record of 3. It's pretty sad when I can hit living moving fighting things better than ones lying on the ground, bleeding to death. Plus you'd think that with me being a dwarf and all, I wouldn't miss things on the ground that much. Oh well, such is life.

Yeah, I thought of that, but I can circle tripped / bashed mobs just fine. Maybe I should get a fireplace poker and roll them over, that way I have a clean shot at the back and kidneys and what have you. Image

In addition to it being wraith form, broken magic fists, ect...

Miss does not mean you swung and didnt hit anything, it means you attacked and you didnt do any damage (Im pretty sure i read a god post to that effect). mobs that are incapicated would still have natural ac for whatever reason? If tiamat was sleeping and you walked up to it and you made physical contact with it with a toothpick its not going to take any damage which on sojourn would be translated as a miss. The combat code already takes into account position for players (lets hope it also does for mobs).
