Gradual Difficulty Increases

Postby Croban/Owom » Mon Jul 22, 2002 10:29 pm

I will start by saying, of course, this has just affected me in a very significant way.

Why is it that you are going along slaying lvl 10 mobs (or lower), and the next room is something that groups of lvl 50s fear to go cr from? put a significant block, whether it be gradually increasing mobs (monestary is perfect example... people really know they are messing with power BEFORE the attic) or a barrier that stops the needless entry.

Also, as an aside, why is the casino owner allowed to attack people in wd without cause? Can we turn him in for a reward? Image (that wasn't what got me, just thinking of arguments against what I am commenting on)

I just wish there had been a (!pick?) door between me and the spanking I ran into I guess.

BTW, login Penshah or Corth please :-P

(edited because I mispelled attack :-P)

Yeah it's my experience on Sojourn that many of the older low-level zones have one mob or a small group of mobs that are 20-40 levels above the rest of the zone. We used to call them "orc chiefs" in Wanderlust, after the Orc Chief in the caves east of WD. SOOOOO many newbies walked into his room and got a nasty surprise. Goblin chief in the same cave too. Spriggan in scorn, malice, displacer beast, these are all orc chiefs, and there are many more.

Just gotta be careful I suppose.. and keep in mind that that one death you suffered finding the orc chief really isn't significant in the grand scheme of things, but the lesson you learned about just running into caves and such lasts a lifetime Image

Unless you're stupid like me and run into the displacer beast on a regular basis... *mutter*

Corth, it was a death to the gnome elementalist that got me (the ugly guy at the bottom of the mines in the gnome hometown). Fortunately Ashiwi was able to single handedly walk in and drag the corpse out.

Which kind of confuses my point. If a single person can CR something like that... I am not so sure my point is valid. I just felt that room was a bit over powered, but at the time I also had not realized I somehow had ventured into the underdark.

When everything looks bleak, I tend to "who corth" Image

There are some hints that the room you died in is coming.. but yah, considering how easy everything else is around that area, it is a bit of a shock.

Don't be surprised that a single person was able to cr you. It will almost always be easier for one person to handle CR's unless blocking code is involved.

Nods the gnome 2up from there said beware of the danger, and pointed down. He was with a few big mobs, yes. So I expected "something" down. I felt like, given the area and that I couldn't get the guy to talk anymore specifically, it was my duty to go look. I was pretty well prepared walking into the room.

The #1 lesson I learned from this, is I should have used one of my summon items and sent them in lit, first. Duly noted.

It does seem that the new zones have been corrective of the lvl 10 then spank that is common in the past, just would say maybe we should add into the _newbie help doc_, that some people have made a living document, information on a few of the more dangerous locales.

Thanks again Ashiwi.
