I know trolls are STUPID but this is stupid too. Waste of time and it's not just this one instance, this happens way too often. Fix?

The guard tower is built out of wood gathered from the swamp. It is not
sturdy and looks as though the tower is ready to collapse at any time. Several
vines grow around the base of the tower, slightly blending into the area.
A large bunch of spears rest beside the tower, ready for use if needed by the
tower guard. The ladder is extremely large, and meant for giants, but it leads
to the top of the tower. A large bunch of bushes seem to be disturbed. A path
eastward leads back to the encampment.

its really sucky to be trying to do quests or explore and not knowing whether you were just too stupid to find it, or there is nothing there.

i really liked a suggestion i saw posted on the bbs about a month ago. When you search, if there is something hidden you will find it, however the amount of lag you suffer is directly porportional to your absolute int. IE an ogre might be lagged 15 seconds from a search and a grey elf only 2.

I mean really searching 100-20 rooms 10x each and still being able to miss secrets is a great pro for exploring. can we make exploring even easier please?

Not that I dont like the idea but what would be the penalty for searching a room with nothing hidden? You would have to ballence this out or it would be absolutly too easy to find hidden items (given that you only ever have to search a room once)

Well... how about this:

a message saying that you are definately sure there ISN'T anything in the room?

Might be the same type of chance roll, but whereas right now you can keep searching forever and still be unsure you missed something, this alternative means you can keep on typing search and on a high enough roll (where in a room with a hidden item you'd uncover it), it tells you there is nothing hidden there so you know when to stop.

This doesn't help the evil race int searching problem, but it'd solve the problems with exploring.

How about chance of search a percentage for race, so each time you search you reduce the actual search by the perctage for that particular race...

ie. trolls get 5% search so like as follows
5% chance to search out target with once search at 100. 2nd attempt then 5 out of 95 chances to search it out, fail again and this is reduced to 5% out of 90% etc.

Use a base for racial int, then as a bonus each notch they have for int would add say like 1% to search ability or whatever it is.

Also take into account mob/player racial agil, and skills which would make searching easier or harder to accomplish. A halfling should be harder to find then an ogre mercenary, as well as size of the mob, perhaps room size as well should be taken into account, if you're in the dark without any ultra of infra would be another factor, and the like.

ooh, really like the idea of a message "your sure there is nothing there" that would encourage exploring a bit i think.

however that doesnt address the complaint that when you know there is something there its frustrating as hell to fail 10, 20, and even 50 searches before finding it.

frob your suggestion that subsequent searches increase your chance of finding something would be interesting and eliminate the prime complaint, failing 40 consecutive searches (assuming all races reach 100% success before 40 searches). It would also somewhat address the issue of not knowing whether something is there when exploring since eventually your search success rate will reach 100%. however simply boosting the rate 10% would effectively eliminate failures numbering > 20 without a lot of work.

on the suggestion i made, the question in my mind is would players like it better if you only had to search once even if your average lag increased (low int races)? No more getting lucky on the first search? every ogre search gonna cost you 20 seconds while a grey gets away with 2 seconds but your guaranteed to find something if its there?

thrand as for making things hard to find... what is really found anymore? its only hard until its found (or solved) the first time. after that player knowledge > char knowledge and sitting around searching 40x for the secret entrance you know is there is ridiculous. either you should find it easier subsequent searches/boots, or after failing 40x you should never find it. that im sure is not gonna happen.

i love the idea of fixing up search a bit. its pretty frustrating to be in a room where you absolutely know something is hidden and having to search 40 times. I searched that exact same room that cherzra had logged over 50 times once before i found the bush that is there. if a troll tore up that much space looking for something in the amount of time it takes to search 50 times it would at least fall through it or destroy everything in the entire room till the bush was all that was left. same with searching a corpse from a different perspective, searching a corpse for a troll may not be an intelligence type of thing but possibly he/she would just rip the corpse into tiny pieces and find whatever was hidden on it, no finesse/int needed. trolls may be stupid but some of thier senses ie: smell/vision/hearing are top notch so whos to say they wouldn't have just as good a chance to find a secret door from the slight draft of air coming through it, carrying a different scent, as the smart human who looks for something a little peculiar?

Just double search chance or something. The idea to have consecutive searches increase the chance is pretty cool too.

ya takes me between 7 and 20x searches to find stuff i know is there..... beyond 20 i assume someone else got it.... or the secret room moved.....then again i go back same place and find it on the 4-5 try.....yaya glad i have 90+wis and >> 120 int....go smart snakes

I notice none of your logs include an output of your attributes.

What is your intelligence at when searching?

Perhaps... you should have chosen a smarter race? I know that's one of the drawbacks of playing a less intelligent race. As an elf with 100+ int, I take at most 7-8 tries to find something, and I think that is a "reasonable" effort for a well-concealed object. That it takes you twice as long, or longer, is what I would expect from a troll.

It is pretty retarted that ANYONE would have to search that much.

The game quite frankly needs some of its time-sinks removed and I think changing search would be a good start.

I think the solution here is to allow a much faster search to be performed in the movement directions.

eg: search up -> minimal lag (1/2 - 1/4 the lag of a nortmal search) + results for that direction only

This allows for faster searching where the direction of the hidden door is KNOWN, but should be slower to search all 6 directions individually than to search the whole room.

As for finding mobs when you know they're in a room? Mobs aren't as static as doors/exits, and the mob that hid under that bush over there yesterday may be up a tree today.

Exits could then be given a flag if it isn't desired by the area maker that they be findable by directional searches (to allow for a perhaps more "organic" zone experience)

I play a drow invoker and a yuanti illusionist, i have minimum 112 int, and most of the time when i search i have 121 or higher.....

anything more than 3 searches for someone that smart is retarded...

i think search should be made alot easier
drow/elf max 5 if you dont find it by then its not there
troll/ogre 15 its not there...
duergar/dwarf 10...
land gnome/halfwits 8?...
