Nice work Azuth :)

Auction: Rotharel bid 1250 platinum on item 7

Could it show, rather than the item number, the name of the item?

5p to identify something seems a little steep, since mostly lowbies will be using the ID.

OK, quick issues so far:
- can "auction list <non body part>" for an empty list
- might want to have a sort by closing time option

Can I suggest that the Baldur's Gate auction company expand with outposts in WD, DK and Viperstongue Outpost?

Items can only be put up for sale and collected in Baldur's Gate, but bids can be placed, items ID'ed, etc in any of the outposts.

was a rough first day :(
and I did test it alot on test, but sure enough funky things happen on main only.
for now it's off until I am there to watch it, but don't worry soon enough it'll be right.

Hyldryn:
yes there are rules against quest items there. same thing as selling items applies here.

Salen:
5p to identify is not out of line

Stamm:
yes will likely attempt to show item instead of number there.
and yes there are plans for mobs in other cities.

Good work on the auction system.

My only suggestion atm would be to make the auction channel show the item name instead of the number. Vandic just bid 1000000 plats on a bigass sword of dwarven smitage is a lot more interesting than Vandic just bid 1000000 plats on item 12343

ok hopefully all problems resolved!

Added object name when bid on to auction channel.

BTW if you haven't figured it out yet 1 mud month = 14 Real Hours
Basically if you type help time you can calc this for yourself :P

The column labeled Time is the time remaining.
1 m could be anywhere from 1.1 months to 1.9 months.
It's just a rough gauge.
It will display days and hours remaining as time passes.

As for listing odd named thingd like auction list hair, yes it'll show an empty list.
I'm not going to scan the whole list to first see if there's a Seller named hair, you'll just have to live with that :)

Listing it sorted would really mess up the id list, but I may come up with some concept like list 2m, where that would show only items with 2 months or less remaining.
I'll think on it some if there's much request for it.

Coming soon!

auction list -2m (list items with less than 2 months remaining)
auction list +5m (list items with more than 5 months remaining)
auction list -24h (list items with less than 24 hours remaining)
auction list +5d (list items with more than 5 days remaining)

also starting bid will be what it really should be, minor mishap there.

Game months is way too long for this to be effective. I could just go get the item I want easier than waiting days and days to win.

I put this in ideas, but will add here just in case. Please allow for any coinage to be used for Identify, not just plats. Stupid auctioneer is a wuss and failed math. When carrying 2100 gold, he says I cannot afford to ID stuff.

Allow very short duration auctions.

At a specified time an auction could take place, and there could be, for example 5 minutes of bidding on each object.

Someone could be there with objects putting a new one on every 2 minutes, and it would lead to a very hectic, fun, auction event.

Sorry Stamm and Tanji 1 to 60 months.
Player driven.

auction identify can pull from other coins next code move.
auction list name will show entries where they are seller or high bidder, again next code move.

Glad you all like it btw 8)

Hmm, thought I had made a post. Ohwell! I guess I hit the preview button instead of submit.

Looks like half my ideas have already been thought of.

First, great job. I think this code will do much to improve the mud. Yay for Azuth.

A couple I'd love to see, though:

1) the ability to sort.

Several axes for sorting strike me as possible: price, bidder, seller, item-name, increment, status

Also, I'd be greatly pleased if there was a line summarizing the transaction immediately before an auction-bought ID goes through.

Something like:
An auctioneer shows you some fluffy magical goblin boots, takes
your money (bastard!) and briefly activates a magical device.
You feel informed
Object 'boots goblin magical fluffy'
etc

Just something before the ID spell fires showing the name of item identified (don't want to get the wrong item now!) and whatever flavor text is desired.

Regards,
Jorus

Great job on the auction i love it!
I would like to suggest though if it would be possible to cancel a bid on something that u bidded? In case u bidded wrongly or u got the item from other means and no longer needs to bid on that?
The bid is then cancelled and reverts back to the previous person's bid.

minor miscellaenous improvements

Postby irta » Wed Aug 20, 2003 4:12 pm

1) auction identify should tell you how many pages are in a spellbook.

2) auction claim shouldn't require you to specify an item. Just give all the plats and items that are claimable by me.

3) be nice if auctions were posted live to a webpage. easy to quickly check how they are doing. Don't bother if it's hard.

4) mmail someone when they are outbid (at least when they were offline at the time of the outbidding).

Just incase you didn't know here's the wearable strings for auction list
FINGER NECK BODY HEAD LEGS FEET HANDS ARMS
SHIELD ABOUT WAIST WRIST WIELD HOLD LIGHT
EYES FACE EARRING QUIVER TAIL

Time Remaining is h - hours, d - days, and m - months. (color coded soon!)

Status is:
OPEN pretty obvious, biddable on
CLOSED closed by staff for some reason
ENDED term ended, buyer and seller need to claim
BUYER term ended, waiting on buyer to claim
SELLER term ended, waiting on seller to claim

I don't know if its because i have a small monitor (14") but i have to tog my paging to 16 lines because they wrap around and don't all fit on one. So one line of auction info = 2 lines on my screen.

I think there needs to be some sort of penalty for removing things from the auction that people have bid on. Perhaps half of the minimum bid is docked from your account and goes to the highest bidder for wasting their time? Annoying to see things go on auction and think oh yes, I think I will bid on that, only to have it removed when you are halfway to BG.

Oh, and perhaps make it so that evils have to pay ten times the amount for auction items to keep the evil man down?

auction channel

Postby irta » Thu Aug 21, 2003 10:27 pm

Another minor suggestion from the Irta.

When someone puts an item up for bid, can you make it so that the auction channel announcement of this fact includes the item number. That way I can just bid on it without looking through a huge list to find its number.

Bidding on an item which has less than 2 mud days left to go, should reset the time to 2 mud days.

This will stop people bidding with mere seconds left.

Otherwise, give it a few weeks and nobody will bid apart from in the last minute.

I like the "bump up time remaining" idea, but bumping it up to 48 RL minutes could be pretty annoying for two people who both want an item but don't want to joust over it for 4 hrs trying to snipe each other.

Imagine being at an auction where they did going once, going twice, going three times, going four times... up to 2880.

How bout a 6 "mud hour" bump? Or does it get fractional?

autobid

Postby irta » Fri Aug 22, 2003 8:23 pm

What's also needed is an autobid command like
auc autobid 22 50000
22 being the item number and
50000 being the amount I'm willing to go to (bidding one increment more then the highest bid)
then I don't need to sit around bg making sure no one outbids me.

I can't predict what would happen, but I don't think it'll end up that way. Only time would tell.

Just so you all don't think I'm ignoring this sniping issue, I'm not.
However that doesn't infer something will change on it either.
I have seen it a few times and I can't say I'm thrilled about it, but it may not be something that requires interference on.
A similar thing can happen simply if an item happens to time out at 5am and noone is around.
Should the guy who stays up until 4:30am get it because he bids 30 minutes before close? sure he should if noone else is there with cash.
If some char decides to quit and starts dropping his eq at 1w (or the auction mob) and someone else is spamming get all, should they get to keep it?
Not all issues can or should be resolved by staff.
If a change is found to be needed it'll happen, if not I probably won't mention this again.

I will say this, try to play fair and respectful and odds are the respect will be returned to you.

261) 1031206169 a pair of shiny golden boots 10 5 No Bid Yet 5 m OPEN Ebgar

That is, people spamming the boards with crap items that don't even get bids. Repeatedly. The same item even.

Solution: Put a limit on how many items each person can auction, and how many of each type they can sell.

5 MONTHS auction time for a pair of rustys or a saph eyepatch? Ebgar you NEED a serious smack upside the head. :P

And Aristan, learn to sell that junk in stores. You'd actually make something for it then. :P

Totally agree Llaaldara - the auction list should be free of real crappy items.

Disagree with an autobid feature. I beleive only players at the auctioneer at the time should be able to bid.

I find the term "sniper" used in regard to bidders at the very end of a timed auction funny. (Apparantly this term is used on timed ebay auctions etc). I also find it amusing that some people seem to dislike others bidding within the last few minutes of an auction on items. I see this as a FEATURE of a timed auction - "The price matters not, until 1 second before the end."
I like it like this.
Everyone knows it's like this.
Of course, if the coders desire the auction to be different with regard to timing, i.e. stop the timer showing a minute by minute countdown for the last few minutes or whatever, then so be it, and that would be cool.
Or even if the actual time left on an item became ramdom within the last few minutes, then so be it as long as the help files clearly advise of this.
But as it is, lets see the good bidding action in the last minute rock on!

This is a fun new feature of the game azuth, good stuff:)

This would reset the auction to 48 minutes.

Meaning that if you are 'around' with auction channel on, then you have plenty of time to outbid someone. If you can't be around, then you can have someone bid for you.

Maybe you like the last minute action, but I don't like it. I don't think many people do like it either, especially buyers and sellers. Buyers will lose out because they get outbid 1 second before the end of the auction. Sellers will lose out because A) People won't bid on stuff if they are going to get outbid at last second B) Prices will not be very good on items, because nobody will bid until the last second. Can't see why you like it, unless you enjoy others misfortune and watching a twink win, or if you plan to do it yourself.

It's unfortunate that it's necessary, but Stamm's idea really is needed to make auctions flourish. Either that or teleport snipers to see Tia. That should make them see the light.

Auctions are to help people make money, which can then be used to acquire what they desire, and in turn give value to money which stimulates the economy.

The amount of profit brought in to sellers while bidsniping goes on is reduce to an absolute min. Sellers do not flourish in a market like this.

The piles of plat that some people obviously have, do not get reduced with bid-sniping, as large amounts of plat are not being used. Instead they continue to pile up. Which is exactly the oppossite reason for the staff wanting the MUD economy to make a turn for the better.

If everyone is rich, yet everyone pays K-mart prices for things, money doesnt mean dinky do. This leaves us with the same exact problem the mud faces right now :!:

I really despise people who do this, and have been doing this to me all today. It's really starting to irritate me. You know what happens when people piss me off right? Vengeance. I'm one step away from recording the names of people who do this and then sniping them back on the items they are trying to get. See how you like it. Auctions should not depend on a person's connection speed.

The ONLY person who is happy when bidsniping takes place is the sniper. The seller isn't happy, because they could have gotten more money. Other bidders aren't happy, because they feel cheated.

Show me one single auction, run by players, on Soj where bid sniping was allowed.

Yeah, I thought so. Now STFU with that sniping is good bullshit.

No it's not. I did do this. I put something well beyond what it was worth. And then watched them bid 50p higher then me at last minute and win.

I've bid grossly high on some things to come back expecting to have won, but fell victim to same thing.

Then how is the seller losing, if they're getting a ton more than the item is worth..? And if you've grossly overpaid, then how is it wrong that someone else that was willing to pay more got the item?

Not everyone has time to sit around the auction room. With no reset timer, people don't even have time to run back and outbid someone who just outbid them. In cases such as this, which differ then some of my experiences - tho not all - the bids remain low. The profit small.

Point still stands.

Doh I meant to say: it would just move the "sniping" to the last few real minutes before the 2 mud days/48 real minutes mark.

Also, I think players would abuse a auc time reset feature and end up pissing a lot of ppl off who are waiting for an auction to end, by repeatedly bidding deep into the final term.

Ahh finally some valid points against last minute bidding.
Nod, I can see the points about possible poor prices etc.

I still like the idea and beleive it is a good FEATURE of a timed auction system. Whilst the auction system is like this everyone knows the time is up when the time is up, and that anyone can bid within a few seconds of that time. PPl should keep this in mind and put items for sale with price and times accordingly. And yeah, perhaps bid big if you really want it early ;)

However, it obviously has it's disadvantages, so perhaps some randomization of the end of each item's auction would be a good idea?
Like at the 2 game day left mark, make the timer have a small random chance of suddenly hitting 0 for the next game day duration, then at the 1 game day left mark, make the timer have a large random chance of suddenly hitting 0 anytime in the next game day duration.
Dunno how hard that would be to code, but sounds like food for thought.

So many ideas to run with! First, thanks for allowing ID with lesser coins, but please further it to allowing it to consider lesser coinage when bidding as well. When you have 100 plat and 4600 gold, it will not let you bid 110 plat.

For the timer resetting to 48 minutes, that's not what I'd honestly like to see. It's one of those 'you snooze, you lose' ideas just like at a real auction - meaning when you really want something, don't toy with it, bid what it's worth? Auction's are for getting what you want at what you believe is a good price. Being frugal can cost ya!

As far as Irta's 'no selling junk' - that's relative. What if there are some new people, which lately I have seen quite a few, and that's all they can afford. What would possibly be an idea is GRADE the eq. The auction/system would say oh, an eldritch ring, this is grade A. so it goes in 'a' list. whereas, tiny silver ring would go in grade C list. ?? Who knows. It does kinda get annoying for stronger players I'd imagine to see relatively trivial eq, but again, can't for get the newer players.

Is it possible to have a range of items for auction? Like auction list -4d -3d, etc. So if you know you'll have class and you can figure out that in that time range it's open (giving you a reason to race back to the comp lab :P) - ah well.

**Hrmmmm. A reconsideration! How bout if someone 'snipes' or attempts to, it'd add one rl minute, giving notification to outbid person...then let the games begin! Seriously, if you want eq, you wouldn't want to toy with the cost..money isn't everything, imho. Ooooh, better yet, a room echo stating for example - The Auctioneer says 'Well, item 435 xxx (ie. worn xxx) has suddenly gained a lot of interest! We'd better pay close attention to this!'

I like being up all night, makes me jibbajabba!

Yet another idea: SORT - Auc list Touk open -2d, for example. Where it doesn't show you N/A, closed stuff. That doesn't matter to me, not sure if it would others as well?

Lastly, a great big endorsement for auction bid/identify #xxx. (just like when you type quit, it says Y/N) The Auctioneer tells you 'you wish for me to identify item #xxx a big red rose? Y/N' same goes for bids. You wish to bid xxx P for Item #xxx ? Y/N

No junk would mean

a slender black steel dagger 10000 1000 No Bid Yet 59 m OPEN
a tiny moss earring 1000 100 No Bid Yet 12 d OPEN

plus the slender longsword
the elven longsword
very dead rat

This is nothing more than cluttering of the board. I would hope someone upstairs would have a freindly talk with people who do this.

Finally, make anything less than 1 month read <1m on the board, the last 14 hours are masked, so it's difficult to time when the auction will run out. It guards against people staying low and bidding last second for a bargain, but lets people know the end is close.

Add an instant sale option when you post, person buying is willing to meet the minimum bid they get the item right away.
