Mentors

Postby Sesexe » Thu Dec 11, 2003 4:04 am

There's a term I haven't heard or used in a long time. Remember when we played for the first time way back when?
Who taught you how to play the game?
Who made you love it and become horribly addicted to it?
Who gave you your first Eq's and madeja think they were a god for doing so?
Who was your Mentor?

Mine? Xanadar :)

You don't mean Xanador do you? Don't misspell your mentor's name :(

My mentor was Mamoru.

Chandigar

And I'm sure a ton of other folks whom I'm doing a disservice to by leaving them off the list. I am sorry! =)

I've had many helpers, but my first real mentor was on toril. He was a higher level ranger named Otanis. I remember that he showed me around one day and took me to the magic gates (that I had never seen). He then challenged me to "solve the puzzle." I was not quite in a mud frame of mine yet and so I tried 15 different variations on emote including Tanahan bows to the magic gates. He about died laughing and I learned a fair bit. He's also the guy I bought my first emerald LS from and it made me care about being a ranger.

Nokie wiggles his bottom.
Teba tells you 'let me do my job you volo twinker!'

Wow, that's a while back...

Kokelei (the ORIGINAL Drunken Bandit) made me roll.

People like Morithiel, Lilithelle, and Fendoren taught me the ropes (many others in there whom I just can't remember) Cerlayne and Wuva taught me how to tank.

When I started an evil elementalist, Levvirnaxxum showed me around taught me how to be a mock-chanter in a group, Ssissiv got me soloing mobs 10 levels higher than me and Turxx, Ch***ra, and Ruagh got me leading groups again.

Lots of peeps deserve credit (all the members of the former eternal covenent, and the rest of the Blood Raiders)
Iaiken Toransier,
Morithiel group sez "Iaiken, you gotta be jonny on the spot with the rescues."
You sez "Roger that."
Morithiel has left the group.
Morithiel tells you "Where were ya on that one?"

Going back to Sojourn 1 was a guy named Santego who got me to roll and got me addicted. I was picked to be the best man at his wedding in October of '02. :)

Never stayed around long enough that time to get any character passed 26, let alone 4 like now. :)

Now, my mentors are the Shades of Twilight on a daily basis. (How is that for brownie points?)

My mentors in rough order of appearance were: Waza, Wug, Berc, Thrakazog/Mumba, Obeah, Santeago, Elscint, Draaz, Lothair/Kurz, and Luknor/Lloric/The Mighty Fehble.

My heros were Draaz and Kurz.

Anyway mentors:

When I first started playing:

Khazid taught me that its all about competition, as we raced to the tiny silver ring/polished steel bracelet every boot.

Mamoru taught me how to keep you people in your place.

Slaag and Torsalan taught me that it doesn't matter if you suck, as long as you're willing to lead, you'll do just fine, until you run out of cannon fodder.

Ragorn taught me that sitting 1w was better than sitting 3w.

Aradune taught me never to say no when someone invites you to come test "a game i'm working on" (the hard way)

Tagad taught me not to drop my weapon at ~. (also the hard way)

Adriorn taught me that ettercap>you.

This wipe:

Dhurno taught me how to tank with all the new spells that came in since toril. He also taught me the best word ever. Egads!

Dala and Kezlor taught me that the mobs always switch to the cleric with 1000+ hps.

Sarell and Touk taught me that style>function.

and Moritheil taught me that as long as there is cannon fodder, there will always be someone there to kill them off:)

Jhorr got me to play and taught me most of what I know of the mud (not that its a lot).

Zazure kept me playing when I would probably have quit.

Dornax taught me what was expectected in a zone group.

Hoho taught me what I needed to know to be a good Shaman in zone groups.

Ashiwi inspired me to roll up a rogue.

Kifle inspired me to delete my rogue (just kidding).

SOI taught me to trust the people in my zone groups.

Moritheil taught me NOT to trust the people in my zone groups.

Lilithelle inspires me to do good things.

Stamm inspires me to do not so good things.

Everyone in SOI inspires me to log in each day and help them kill stuff.

Slif and Benshar (Quaychang) combined got me hooked here when I first rolled and grubbed around the alleys of Waterdeep.

Rylan, Darnalak, Renzhen helped keep me fascinated as we trawled southern waterdeep. ("Shit the battle merc fled. Sylvos, you have awareness, go after it", e, R.I.P.")

My own bullheadedness got me to explore, map and memorize Undermountain in order to race Aradune, Adriorn and Arigon to the Ettercap and the uber plat-plated bracers on the ground.

Otherwise, just a myriad of people and faces I've crossed paths with over the years have taught me so much I can't name em all.

Heh, Sylvos got me hooked on UM2, and I'm still puzzling over it. I wish somebody would finish it some day, and fix all the cool stuff in it. It's yet another really great and complex zone that needs a little lovin'. Hrmmm, I think my mentor would really have to be Lorgan, even though he and I were both new here at the same time. Calinth showed me around Evermeet a lot, and took me on my first trip to HP. Since then it's been Lilithelle... and it's great learning from the best.

Hmm I can't really say that I had a mentor as much as hard knocks.

Kanthas/Tastone and Thrakazog/Mumba would have to really be the only two playing mentors. Sure I've learned lots of stuff like smack talking (thanks Thanuk), being a bitch (thanks Mystra) and being two-faced (thanks Kiaransalee and Mystra) but nothing directly relating to gameplay.

Hmm I guess Lazzaraxum (sp) really got me wanting to play an illithid.

Oh and Targsk taught me how to look good dying.
Lilithelle stops using a softly throbbing piece of flesh.
Gura group-says 'ill go solo the biznatch, just don't tell Stamm'
Kossuth responds to your petition with 'is it bad that the two words i think of when i see yer title are hottub and cthulhu? :('

Lavey taught me how to get groups after I got outcasted for giving a troll back a sword he fumbled and couldn't pick up before he died! I suck at this.

Hrm, I'm dating myself a bit, but two clerics really taught me: Furgus and Murni. I'm going to throw Mikayla an honorable mention simply because he yelled when I didn't heal well back in 95. Still remember when clerics would charge for resses.

As for leading, three people really influenced me: Kurz, Tavon and Jerthal. Tavon and Kurz really showed how to lead people. Jerthal for showing how to motivate people into forming a team.
