Cold waters run deep....

Postby Lilira » Sat Dec 18, 2004 11:54 pm

I sat in the morgue in Waterdeep, playing my pipes as the cleric fussed over a recently resurrected person. Knowing from experience how disconcerting the return to ones body is, I spend what time I can with the clerics using my song to help relieve the disorientation and aid in the recovery of the patient.

The cleric escorted her charge out and I ended my song exhausted. I stared at the wall with unseeing eyes, willing my head to stop pounding, and trying to sing a song to renew my strength. The words would not come. I leaned against the wall taking deep breaths in an effort to drag myself to the inn when a pool of glowing light appeared at my feet. I had traveled with Sotana several times recently, so without a thought I stepped through. I braced myself against the brief disorientation this method of travel entailed, and got a mouthful of water as I gasped in shock. I was surrounded by its icy cold embrace. A cloud of silver surrounded me as my hair moved with the slow motion of this eerie place. Soaked to the bone, I began shivering almost immediately while I got my bearings. Sotana stood with me and I nodded in greeting, thankful I had my fish bone earring on.

I frowned at her and raised my eyebrow in question. She gestured at a shadowed object behind me. I turned around and saw it.

A monolith.

Here under the ocean, and the fifth one I had seen. It was similar in appearance to the one in the Volcano in the Moonshae Islands, damaged and repaired as best as possible. Understanding why Sotana had sent for me, I made my way to it and reached out my hand to touch the stone.

One gleaming white star, a pretty gem in the shroud of deepest night
A handful of stars, a story told in the constellation of dreams
A band of constellations marching across the sky to light the road
Waves of stars surging across the heavens to banish the dark
Shaping the path, to quench the destruction promised from another time
One star can banish the dark but is masked by the smallest of hands
Bring hope, all hope, that light may yet shine after battle is done

It feels incomplete, as if there is still more story yet to be told. The Stone
still shows signs of the horrendous damage caused to it, despite the healing
efforts of Faerun and the Selunite priestess. The monolith seems to almost
whimper in agony, nearly alive.

I could feel the pain in the spirit of the stone pulling at my heart. I sought to comfort it and there….

Arms reach around, to add solace to the ravaged stones. Abruptly pain lances
into your mind like a knife of blackness, carrying with it a vision of fear.

Quiet, be quiet... The bright grey of the place seemed to be turning pink, with
the blood of the disorganized would-be heroes who had come to fight Him. A mere
handful of drow elves, a clump of dwarves and humans - they thought to be enough
to clear the way to His form? A bloody clot of blond hair drifts past, might
have been that attractive cleric...

A patch of shadow coalesced - time to hide. They'd swarmed up from everywhere,
cutting us down before we could reach the mountain. One by one we fell, we
regrouped only to face another assault. If only there was a chance to sneak
out, to get help...

Air rushing past, before full awareness of the impact resolves. Falling,
falling, past grinning demon faces leering at the howl of pain and terror.
Another pawlike fist, long claws raking, thuds hard and droplets of blood soar
through the featureless environment in pursuit. Nowhere is up, nowhere is down,
except the buffeting fists keep the momentum up. Tumbling like a rag through
the swirling detritus, falling, falling...

The pain swirls, flashes of color gradually yielding to show the fractured stone
before your eyes. The vision has ended, yet memory lingers painfully.

I clenched my teeth and swallowed, fighting the urge to retch, the images of the monolith fresh in my head. I looked at Sotana and nodded, ready to leave this place of eerie silence. I looked around uneasily as she vanished, returning to the safety of her grove. My shoulder blades itched, and I hoped Sotana would send for me soon. After what seemed like forever in my ever nervous and watchful state, the shining pool appeared at my feet and I stepped through just as a shadowed form entered the watery garden where we had just been.

* * * *

The calming quiet of the forest greeted me, almost an embrace after the chill of the ocean. I squished my way to the nearest tree and sat down leaning against it. I looked over at Sotana.

“Where was that,” I asked.

“Skerttd-Gul,” was the druidess’s response. I had heard tales of the dreaded underwater kingdom, but I had never been there.

“That was my fifth one to vist,” Sotana told me.

I nodded at her, wet hair sticking to my face. “Mine too. Thank you for remembering my interest in the monoliths.”

“That was one of the monoliths that Noloth'e spoke of with eyes 'cut out',” she murmered. I felt my eyebrows head for my hairline.

“You’ve been speaking with Noloth’e,” I asked in surprise. She nodded. Sheesh, everyone but me. Even the Priest had seen her. Well, was chased off by her. Must be because she’s a priestess and the others are servants of their gods. Well except for Lintral, but I really don’t want to go in to where he gets his talent from.

Shudder.

She told me of her visit to the monolith far to the north. I was planning a trip there soon myself, gathering a very select group of guardians to accompany me. I’ve had too many “friends” turn on me lately.

I listened attentively wishing I had her flare for words. I believe her talents were wasted as a druid. She should have been a bard, I thought chuckling to myself.

Next she told me of her intent to visit the monolith in the elven ruins. The expression on my face must have amused her, for she chuckled.

“My god grants me the ability to alter my form into that of an animal. I should be able to avoid most of the devils there,” she enlightened me.

I nodded. Well, my travels with Sotana had been the most time I’d really spent with a druid. Handy folk though.

“I wish you safe journeys Lady Druid. I should probably make myself scarce once more, not everyone is friendly these days.” I dragged myself to my feet, still shivering in my wet garments.

“If I am permitted, may I send for you when I reach the monolith,” she asked. I frowned for a moment. I really wanted to see all of the monoliths, but I worried about that one. She might be able to avoid the devils, but I would stick out too well, and my skills at hiding were horrible. I shrugged. No spine, no tale I always say.

“I would very much appreciate it Sotana,” I said giving her a hug, the gesture feeling slightly stilted, “But only if it will not place yourself in jeopardy.”

She grinned at me mischievously and disappeared in that way of hers. With a sigh, I wandered off, boots squishing, to get dry and find another corner to tuck up into.

Their general locations are commonly known Sonon. From there it is up to you to search them out. Some of them may be inaccessible to you but most are in areas you can safely visit if you take a few precautions. They are well worth the viewing!

Oh don't worry...if the King were to do anything like that, I'd have him killed for..."consorting" with the enemy.
