IMHO, excluding rogues because they are easy to keep alive in bad situations and easy to get exp, anyone who has a very large level 50 buffer is either playing the game too safely, playing it way too much, or is casting 'word of recall' too quickly, and regardless, really ought to find a new hobby...
Having said all that, the situation has been handled, so this thread is pretty much at an end. -Kossuth

however, lilithelle actually rolled over the variable that stores exp and leveled from 50 to 1 (when you try to store a # to big to fit in a particular variable it usually goes negative).
How much exp is it for the rollover to happen?

It varies from class to class I think.

Strictly speaking, her question is correct. The TNL% varies from class to class, but the actual number itself is going to be the same since it's stored in a variable which has one maximum ceiling. I have no idea what sort of xp we're looking at, but just knowing a little binary you could probably guess at the number. However whether it's 65536 (16 bits), 4,294,967,295 (32 bits), or 18,446,744,073,709,551,615 (64 bits), since we never actually see the XP numbers it's not useful information, though it is interesting to think about.
I got those numbers by using a scientific calculator and entering 16, 32, and 64 ones in to the binary side, then switched to the decimal side, fwiw.

you can get the same numbers by taking 2 to the power of bits. Like 2^32. However, when you're dealing with signed numbers (negative and positive), you may have 32 bits, but only 31 bits are used for the number and the last bit is used for the sign. So, you need to take 2^31 and subtract one, to get the highest positive value a 32-bit register or variable can hold.

Llaaldara wrote:Um.. I just wanted to know what her percentage was before it rolled over. 999%, or 9,999%? was 10,000% exp the rollover? or was it 100,000%?
Since it's percentage, I'd think it would be the same percentage for all classes to hit rollover. So what percentage is rollover?
Er, no. When you store a variable in some sort of programming language, you usually have to define if you want it to be an INT, WORD, LONG, etc, and those will have a maximum bit size. So the xp is stored in that variable and can only reach that high before "funny things (TM)" start happening, if you don't program to expect the ceiling to be reached. On the other hand, the % of your xp is based (probably not strictly) on the D&D xp tables, where a rogue with 1,000,000 xp is probably going to be higher level than a mage with 1,000,000 xp. If I had to guess, I'd say the percentage that's shown when you type "sco" is probably calculated right then and there, rather than being stored in it's own variable. Hence, the actual XP number itself is the same across all classes, but the percentage can vary widely.

the percentage would be different, but the actual amount of XP would be the same.
Let's assume it's a 32-bit signed integer for the xp variable.
This would mean the xp bar would roll over at an experience total of 2,147,483,647 points.
As a rogue, let's assume that you need 1 billion xp points to get to 50, yet there is only a difference of 20 million xp points from 49 to 50.
1,000,000,000 (20 million of those took you from 49 to 50).
thus, for every 20 million xp points you get, your xp bar grows by 100%.
So, your percentage bar would be at 5737% when it rolled over.
However, as an enchanter, let's assume you need 1.5 billion xp points to get to 50, yet there is only a difference of 40 million xp points from 49 to 50.
1,500,000,000 (40 million of those took you from 49 to 50).
Now, your percentage bar would read 1618% when it rolled over.
---
I don't know the real xp tables, and I know they are curved to allow lower xp per level at the lower levels and greater xp per level at the higher levels, but this example is just from my head and pocket calculator.
Well I was under the impression that each class had different exp tables.
Is this not true? Are all exp tables per level the same for all classes? and some classes just exp faster because they have skills that reward more exp? and the percentage of exp upon mob death is different per class?
Like for an enchanter to get 50th it might require 200 million exp
and for a warrior it might be 100 million exp
If it takes 20 million exp for 49th to 50th level for the enchanter
and 10 million exp for 49th to 50th for the warrior
It's still 10% for both of them. So if either hit score at that point, they'd both still see 10%.

No, it is the actual number that matters if Lilithelle's exp is any indicator. She was at approx 4k and I believe Pava actually had a higher % than Lilithelle when she rolled over.

Let's see if I can list the elements and make this clear.
XP is stored in a variable.
The variable maximum is the same between all classes.
The variable is therefore capped at the same size for all classes.
The variable is most likely to be either 32 or 64 bits, with an outside chance for it being 16 or 128 bits.
The xp% is calculated by taking the amount of xp you need for your next level and dividing it by the amount you already have towards that level.
Classes have different xp tables.
The xp % shown is therefore different for all classes.
---
I'm confusing myself a little by trying to state this succinctly and logically correctly, but the long and the short of it is that the xp% that any class rolls over at will be different from any other class. The answers that Raiwen and I gave answered your initial question, but clearly that wasn't the real question that you were asking.

You can esticalc the % over 50 at which you have exactly 2x the exp at 50 using trophy. For cleric this was about 671% I believe. I think someone said once upon a time that it was 280mill xp to level 50 for a cleric so at 671% you have about 560 million exp, at 1342% you'd have about 840 million exp ect ect ect. Different classes with different required amounts of exp to 50 would post different %s and hit the exp "cap" at different numbers.
Based on those kind of calcuations, what lilithelle said her exp % was and 2^x power, the exp cap is right at 2 billion (probably exactly 2,147,483,647). Since Lilithelle no longer gains %'s of exp (herse), the "fix" is somewhat obviously to discard exp that would exceed the cap.
this little lesson in exp was brought to you but the letters H and S
